New Maryland recruit goes too far with Jeremy Lin tweet

Stefon Diggs AP

Well, the Jeremy Lin phenomenon — I refuse to use the term “Linsanity” or any other pun involving Lin’s name — has made his way into the college football hemisphere.

Sorry, we tried as to keep it out as long as we could.

And, frankly, we wouldn’t be dealing with this if new Maryland signee Stefon Diggs could learn to be a five-star recruit who can stay away from saying anything too outragious. But, as with most teenagers, that’s a task on the difficulty scale of somewhere between “Not going to happen” and “What R U, trippin’? LOL”

The soon-to-be Terp managed to channel his inner Jason Whitlock when he tweeted the following message about Lin last night:

Well, that’s… that’s classy. I’m sure Maryland will be real thrilled with this maneuver fresh off of the Danny O’Brien transfergate. In Diggs’ defense, though, he did apologize later.

Look, it was a dumb thing to say, but anybody who takes the words — excuse me, the tweets — of a high school senior too seriously has some things they need to sort out too.

But there is a valuable lesson to be learned from all of this. As comedian Ron White once put it, “Next time you have a thought, just let it go.”

Diggs got five stars? Folks gotta get off his (insert racially-stereotypical foods representing genitalia here).

    He’s good, though.

Ben – isn’t it a bit odd to say we shouldn’t take his words seriously, then dedicate an entire post to him? I agree that he’s a teenager and while his words are dumb, comparing him to a professional writer like Whitlock is more than a stretch.

    Examples of Outrageous

They will be punished for their outrageous behavior.
This is outrageous! I will not put up with such treatment.
She’s known for her wild hairdos and outrageous costumes.
At first it seemed like an outrageous idea, but then we realized that it wasn’t so crazy after all.
The article makes some outrageous claims about her personal life.

I agree, enough with Jeremy Lin already, good grief. He isn’t curing cancer people.

I’m more offended that it’s not even funny. At least be funny when you cross the line.

If Lin were black and it was a white guy commenting on chitlins and watermelons then there’d be hell to pay.

IMO this is hate speech and the kid should be suspended for at least 1 year for his “insensitivity” and his “disrespect of diversity”

Where was this guy when Mike Vick/Cam Newton were being overhyped?

Yeah, must agree with the Cam Newton being overhyped. He did only win a National Championship, Heisman, NFL Rookie of the Year, Rookie Passing record (breaking some unknown named Peyton Manning).

    Yep, definitely overhyped!

I hope you are kidding….hate speech? Nothing hateful about it…ever seen Chris Rock? It was a joke…a bad one…considering all of the headlines of what Whitlock said..and others…isn’t this just a joke making fun of all the dumb things people have said about Lin….and Ben…how do you not see that? Nothing worse then making stories out of nothing…particularly when trying to make something a race issue

How is what Don Imus said in 2007 about the Rutger women’s basketball any different than what Jason Whitlock, Floyd May Weather and kid….oh ya he was white. A racist is a racist no matter what color.

Scam Newton is a liar, thief, and cheat who should NEVER have been allowed on any college football field. Imagine lying to the NCAA he didn’t know his ol man was shopping him around like a whore!
He dam well knew and now the NCAA have changed the rules so that if something like that happens again, playa won’t be allowed. AUBURN should be ashamed for allowing him on the team! It was a hollow NC and a black-mark against AUBURN! That program will and should be scrutinized from now until the next coaching staff is hired. SHAMEFUL!!! You should be ashamed of your school!
