Gary Patterson says drug numbers are ‘somewhere in the middle’

A little over a week after news broke that members of TCU’s football program were arrested as part of a school-wide drug sweep, coach Gary Patterson broke his public silence on the matter.

Speaking to the media after the Horned Frogs’ first spring practice, Patterson incorporated the timeless coachspeak of “it’s never as bad as you think, never as good as you think” to the drug situation when he acknowledged that he tested his players for drug use on Feb. 1.

“The most disappointing thing for me is our whole team felt like, after watching for two days, that we all of a sudden went from good to everybody is bad, and that’s not true. We spend 90 percent of our time on 10 percent of our kids that are knuckleheads. We’re not going to quit having knuckleheads. Nobody is. Not at any other school in the country.

“You want an exact number and the world is not about exact numbers. I know what the exact number is. Somewhere between that five, and maybe it’s five, maybe it’s 82. The key is what we’re trying to do about it. And we’re going to keep fighting it. The reality is always somewhere in between. That’s not going to change. There’s not a school in the country that’s drug free.”

While we may never know the exact number of those involved, the way TCU handled the whole situation, from head administrators on down to Patterson, was exemplary.
