WVU officially hires Slaughter to coaching staff

Two weeks after his name first appeared in connection an open spot on West Virginia’s coaching staff, Erik Slaughter has officially become the newest members of the Mountaineers’ defensive coaching unit.

WVU announced today that Slaughter would be joining Dana Holgorsen‘s staff in a yet-to-be-specified role. Holgorsen is expected to announce the final responsibilities for his assistants on March 5.

“Erik brings an extensive background with more than 20 years of coaching experience to the Mountaineer staff,” Holgorsen said. “Having spent his entire career as a coach and a recruiter in the state of Texas also gives him an outstanding knowledge and extensive network base that will increase our recruiting efforts in the Southwest as we enter the Big 12 Conference. I look forward to having him on the coaching staff here.”

Slaughter comes to WVU from the 1-AA ranks at Stephen F. Austin, where he coached defensive line coach for the Lumberjacks for the past three years. Slaughter joins WVU receivers coach Shannon Dawson, who was the offensive coordinator at SFT before coming to Morgantown to join Holgorsen last year.

The news of Slaughter’s hiring comes less than a week after WVU announced Keith Patterson was coming from Arkansas State.
