At least for the spring, the Colorado quarterback floor is all Connor Wood‘s.
Expected to compete with the Texas transfer for the starting job, Nick Hirschman will instead be rehabbing yet another foot injury as the Buffs announced Wednesday that the sophomore broke a metatarsal bone in his right foot over the weekend. And just how did Hirschman suffer this latest injury? According to the school, “while walking and apparently misstepping.”
The release stated that Hirschman left Colorado Wednesday for his home in Los Gatos, Calif., and is scheduled to undergo surgery later this week. The procedure and subsequent rehab will keep him out for all of spring practice.
Hirschman spent most of the offseason recovering from a pair of surgeries for a broken metatarsal in his left foot. He had already been somewhat questionable for this spring due to the first injury.
With Hirschman out for the foreseeable future -- there’s no word on what if any impact this latest procedure will have on his availability for the start of summer camp -- the first-team offense will be in Wood’s hands this spring. Wood, ranked as a four-star player and the No. 3 pro-style QB in the country by Rivals.com in 2010, transferred to the Buffs from the Longhorns last August and sat out the season to satisfy NCAA bylaws.
The only other QBs on the Buffs’ roster for the spring are a pair of redshirt freshmen -- redshirt freshman John Schrock and Stevie Joe Dorman. Schrock spent last season as the No. 3 QB behind Hirschman and starter Tyler Hansen.
