Joe Adams, Honey Badger finalists for Johnny Rodgers award

Joe Adams, Mike Locksley AP

You can officially add one more postseason honor to the countless individual awards handed out every year in college football.

The inaugural Johnny Rodgers National College Football Return Specialist Award will be given to, you guessed it, the best return specialist in the sport. The four finalists for this year’s award are former Arkansas receiver Joe Adams, North Carolina’s T.J. Thorpe, Dustin Harris from Texas A&M and LSU’s Tyrann “Honey Badger” Mathieu.

The award is named after 1972 Heisman Trophy winner and College Football Hall of Famer Johnny Rodgers of Nebraska.  The winner will be announced Thursday and be presented with the award during a banquet in Omaha, Neb., on April 12.

And, as a reminder, here’s a video of Adams’ punt return against Tennessee mashed with the sweet symphony of the “Benny Hill” theme song.

(It’s not that we’re giving Adams preferential exposure over the other equally deserving candidates. It’s just that in my limited YouTube search, Adams’ return was the only one that featured the “Benny Hill” theme. So, yeah. We’re going with that.)

There are certainly many qualified finalists, all perhaps, but I don’t know all. I saw Tyrann Mathieu with several returns that looked like he had eyes on the back of his head, the uncanny ability to know when to pause and allow the opposing players to run by him or lose their balance. I am sure a deserving player will win, but my vote (which is worthless) is for The Honey Badger–Tyrann Mathieu of LSU.

All are speical talents. But this Joe Adams run is a once in a life time run. I expect it will end up between Adams and Mathieu

Hey mrslay1: Actually agree with you. Joe Adams punt return maybe the greatest of all time. Perfect song for the run because the run was ridiculous.

However, I give the edge to Tyrann Mathieu. Overall, the better of the two.

Well for once we almost agree. I believe Adams will shine in the NFL as he did 2 years ago. He just plays so fast which is something you can’t see till they get there. I watched every game of Arkansas for 3 years and though Wilison is a great QB, he is not close to Mallett with delivery speed and under threw Adams most of the year. He was open most all plays this year and Wilson just couldn’t get the ball to him. Of coarse Wilson didn’t have a OL and spent most of the year running for his life. It won’t be that way this year:-)

It is a shame for a guy like Adams to be that talented and not get any looks post Mallet, whether its Wilson or the O-line. I like Adams though…a lot more than Mathieu.
