With his Michigan days officially behind him, wide receiver Darryl Stonum is looking for a fresh start with one year of eligibility remaining.
At a court hearing on Friday in which he was sentenced to an additional 30 days of probation for missing a court-mandated drug test -- Stonum says he missed the test after fracturing his arm while moving out of his apartment -- Stonum said Eastern Michigan was one of a handful of finalists for his remaining year, but wouldn’t comment beyond that.
“Nothing’s finalized yet, but I definitely like Eastern Michigan and I know coach (Ron) English pretty well,” said Stonum. “I have a lot of respect for him and the way he runs his program.”
English was a former Michigan assistant under Lloyd Carr who recruited Stonum out of Texas. However, English was not retained when Rich Rodriguez took over the Michigan program in 2008.
Stonum redshirted the 2011 season after he was arrested last May for a DUI, a crime that ultimately landed the receiver a suspension from coach Brady Hoke. A probation violation in January in which Stonum was reportedly caught driving with a revoked license would eventually cost him a spot on the team.
I love Darryl and wish him nothing but the absolute best,” Hoke said in a statement regarding Stonum’s dismissal. “However, there is a responsibility and a higher standard you must be accountable to as a University of Michigan football student-athlete.”
