Bizarre incident leads to arrest and suspension for Pitt LB

Carl Fleming AP

For the first time since taking over at Pittsburgh after Todd Graham slithered out of the backdoor, Paul Chryst is faced with an off-field issue involving one of his new football players.

According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, linebacker Carl Fleming was arrested Friday night following an incident outside of an Oakland (PA) convenience store, an incident in which he allegedly tried to get rid of some herbal evidence by… swallowing it.  And that came after attempting to play bumper cars with a police car with his own vehicle.  Allegedly.

The Tribune-Review has the details, including a police officer performing a Heimlich maneuver that appears to come straight out of an MMA manual:

As Fleming exited the store and got into his Ford Taurus, police approached and attempted to stop him for a traffic violation. Fleming pulled away and attempted to hit the marked police car before crashing into a guard rail, according to a criminal complaint.

Fleming then shoved a plastic bag containing marijuana in his mouth and started to swallow, authorities said. Officers pulled Fleming from the car and, after failing to remove the bag, punched him, successfully dislodging the drugs from his mouth, the criminal complaint states.

Despite commands to remain on the ground, Fleming struggled with officers before being handcuffed, authorities said.

As a result of that incident, Fleming was hit with a litany of charges, including two counts of aggravated assault, resisting arrest, fleeing or eluding police, drug possession, tampering with evidence and vehicular offenses.  He was also indefinitely suspended by the football program.

Last season, Fleming played in 12 games.

None of this would have happened if weed was legal! Legalize it already

Dang! Memo to crooks: Just give up the drugs. It’s better then taking an uppercut to your chest.

But man, after what this jerk did, I am sure the cops enjoyed that immensely.

i’ll never understand why kids who play sports in college will do such stupid things to ruin their chances of going pro…IF u have to do something illegal or against the rules at least wait till ur on a break and DONT DO IT IN PUBLIC!!! it blows my mind, but theres always someone waiting in line behind u to take the chance and make the most of the opportunity to play at the next level…its a shame and i hope this kid can get his stuff together and learn from this…

These kids won’t ever learn. It is ridiculously that they are given a great opportunity to better themselves with an education, yet they make bad decisions like this guy. I mean really, if you are gonna do the drugs do it at a friends house or get a hotel room. Don’t do it in public!

Instead of advising these kids to go to a friends or get a hotel or wait until your out on break, try advising them to not do drugs at all.

This is another bad story. But as a Razorback I have to say nothing yet has topped Jason Peaock stealing a debet card, using it for $30.00 worth of gas and going to jail and getting kicked out of football. When will these kids learn?
