Of the two major additions in NCAA legislation to be put forward over the past year -- the offering of multiyear scholarships and up to an additional $2,000 to the value of an athletic scholarship -- the latter still faces an uphill battle to be passed.
Despite heavy opposition for both proposals, multiyear scholarships were officially adopted as of February. Legislation for an additional stipend for athletic scholarships, however, was suspended in December and was on track to be re-evaluated later this month.
Turns out, that delay could be extended until August.
The Chronicle of Higher Education reports, and citing a college president with knowledge of the topic, that any action on the $2,000 stipend by the NCAA’s Board of Directors could be delayed until after league meetings this summer so that the board can have more time to hear feedback from conference and institution officials.
The $2,000 stipend legislation was initially passed last October only to meet an override a couple of months later citing numerous concerns ranging from Title IX to competitive equity.
Additionally, any revamping -- or slimming, altering, modernizing, etc. -- of the NCAA’s rulebook doesn’t look like it will be completed by its August deadline, either. NCAA president Mark Emmert (pictured) asked for modification last year, but members of the rules-working group told the CHE that the process has (shocker) proved to more complicated than previously thought.
