Terps lose first-team All-ACC end for rest of spring

A heart issue has already cost Maryland a starting defensive end for spring practice. Now, another health issue has cost the Terps a second starter at the same position.

Hey, at least it’s not another transfer, right?

Anyway, head coach Randy Edsall confirmed Saturday that defensive lineman Joe Vellano will miss the remainder of spring practice due to a foot injury. It’s unclear how Vellano suffered the injury or the specific nature of the issue. The issue is not expected to impact Vellano’s availability for summer camp.

Playing in 12 games last season, Vellano led the Terps in sacks (seven) and finished third in tackles (94). For that, he was named to the first-team All-ACC squad.

Vellano joins fellow end Keith Bowers on the sidelines for the Terps this spring. Bowers was diagnosed with heart palpitations last month and is unavailable for the spring sessions.
