Bo Pelini on Arkansas connection: it’s ‘kind of ludicrous’

Bo Pelini, Jerry McGinn AP

Gus Malzahn stated simply he was the coach at Arkansas State.

Skip Holtz called the connection flattering.

Nebraska coach Bo Pelini, on the other hand, was not as giddy to have his name connected to the now-open job at Arkansas. Or, maybe he was just being Bo. Either way, Pelini essentially dismissed the idea that he would be the next coach of the Razorbacks.

You talking about the Arkansas thing?” Pelini asked when the topic came up. “Actually, I didn’t even know my name got thrown around. I don’t even know how that stuff happens.

“I’m here and I’m happy to be here.”

Pelini went on to call the connection “kind of ridiculous.” Although not on JT’s list of potential candidates, Pelini’s name has been making its way through the rumor mill following the dismissal of Bobby Petrino last night. I guess no one told him.

“I always say this (Nebraska) is a destination job; it’s not a stepping stone job,” Pelini said. “People throw names out there. At the end of the day, we’re focused on trying to win a championship here.

“That’s all I’m concerned with. That’s what we’re looking forward to doing — having the best football team we can this fall.”

    Bo should be flattered. Arkansas is a top SEC team. Nebraska is a declining team in a little declining conference with little chance ever for a National championship.

    SEC honks are unbelievable.

  3. greenytheterp says: Apr 11, 2012 10:22 PM

    How about Randy Edsall for the new coach? One can dream, can’t he?

    @rsmeans …

    I’m a huge SEC fan … but come on. Last I counted, Nebraska had a few more championships than Arkansas. Pelini is right about that being a destination program. And I’m mighty proud of the SEC’s six consecutive championships–especially since my team accounts for two of them. Roll Tide!! But the pendulum is always swinging. Our streak won’t last forever, and you’re nuts if you think the Big 10 is down and out.

    Funny how fans of the scrub teams like Arkansas love to ride the SEC coattails of Alabama and LSU. Didn’t Ohio State beat Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl recently? Florida is back to mediocre. Auburn is average now that Cam Newton is gone. Tennessee? Whatever. Then there’s Kentucky, Ole Miss, Miss, and Vanderbilt. The SEC has 2 really good teams and 2 good teams (Ga and SC). Outside of that, the conference as a whole is very average.

  6. getsome99 says: Apr 11, 2012 11:21 PM

    Fans who root for a “conference” are stupid. This is rampant with SEC fans more than anyone else. Do you really think USC alums would ever root for UCLA in anything for any reason? Or Indiana grads rooting for Purdue? I’ve never understood this logic from these “SEC” fans. Just dumb.

  7. sports_dude says: Apr 11, 2012 11:34 PM

    @getsome99 You wouldn’t understand because you have no clue what it’s like to be in a conference of this prestigious. Pelini can stay at Nebraska. He couldn’t hack it in the SEC.

  8. getsome99 says: Apr 11, 2012 11:44 PM

    Yeah, ok. That’s what it is. You’re an idiot. That’s why I graduated from University of South Carolina. I can say many great things about my alma mater as it is a special school. But to ride the coattails of my opponents and rivals success would be pathetic. In other words, if you’re a fan of Florida, LSU, Alabama, or Auburn, enjoy you’re bragging rights for winning. But if you’re a fan of any of the other programs, stand on your own two feet and admit that you suck.

  9. Brian Basher says: Apr 11, 2012 11:56 PM

    @getsome99 Funny how you call Arkansas a scrub team, but call South Carolina a good team really?? When the Razorbacks have beat them the last 3 years in a row and not just beat them but pounded them.

    Come to think of it Razorbacks beat Georgia the last time they played as well. Oh they also ended the last 2 seasons ranked higher than both Georgia and South Carolina.

    In the last 2 years the Razorbacks have lost to 2 national champions (Auburn & Alabama 2x) and a team that played in the national championship game (LSU)

    They did lose to Ohio St. in the Sugar Bowl a team that played 5 players that should have been declared ineligible to begin with and a team that not only vacated that win but their whole 2010 season

    As far as rooting for a conference…you’re damn right we do it’s called PRIDE. The SEC is the BEST conference in college football. What other conference has won 6 straight BCS titles? That is something to be damn proud of

    Is it SEC fans fault that other schools don’t have pride in their conferences like we do in ours?

  10. tryagainplease says: Apr 11, 2012 11:59 PM

    So you graduated from USCarolina one of the ‘good’ teams in the sec- when did that good team last beat the scrub Arkansas? We play every year- hogs winning the last 3 and 7 of the last 10. Woo pig sooie.

  11. coolhorn says: Apr 12, 2012 12:12 AM

    Pelini’s not leaving the corn unless they kick him out of there. The swine will probably bring McGee back from UAB. That would be their best move, for now. If you’re “SEC” “SEC” “SEC” fan living vicariously off of ‘Bama and LSU championships, I’m happy for you and you’ll love your new conference mates from Texas’ agricultural college. Just don’t expect the rest of us NOT in the confederacy to get this conference worship thing. I’m a Longhorn fan, and I’m hardly gonna do the happy dance if okie wins another crystal football. I guess that makes me NOT a Big XII fanatic.

  12. getsome99 says: Apr 12, 2012 12:17 AM

    I expect the Cocks to be one of the better SEC teams this year. Arkansas has been better with Petrino as coach, but he’s no longer the coach. My scrub reference is in comparison to Nebraska. Would coaching at Kentucky be a better gig than say Florida State or Texas just because Kentucky is in the SEC.

    There’s a fine line between stupidity an pride. Are you telling me Auburn fans are “proud” of Alabama for winning the national championship? The conference bit is a convenient card to play in sports debates when you can’t brag about your own team.

  13. Brian Basher says: Apr 12, 2012 12:22 AM

    Arkansas leads the series with South Carolina 13-7 so who’s the good team and who’s the scrub team again??

  14. getsome99 says: Apr 12, 2012 12:28 AM

    I don’t see SEC coaches bonding with each other because they coach in the same conference. Instead, they’re usually trying to throw each other under the bus for cheating. Winning is great, but is it really worth it when you display no character or integrity?

    Low grad rates
    Rapes
    Robberies
    Other arrests
    Cheating coaches
    Cheating AD’s
    Illiterate players

    I know this is not limited to SEC programs, but they seem to have more of these issues than other schools.

  15. getsome99 says: Apr 12, 2012 2:38 AM

    Find a coach first and we’ll see what happens. So Carolina was not very good prior to Spurrier and should win their division AGAIN this year barring any major injuries to Lattimore. Arkansas has never really been a contender to win the SEC in my lifetime regardless of what their overall record is against USC. Arkansas was doing ok, but they reached from a scumbag, yet productive coach, and now they’re disgraced. Back to the bottom of the pile.

    Pretty weak attempt at a troll.

    I give you a score of a 1 out of a possible 10.

    @getsome99

    The Razorbacks are the 23rd-most successful team in college football history by number of wins

    In the last 4 years Razorbacks have been 34-17
    South Carolina – 36-20

    Since Spurrier took over South Carolina has gone 55-35 Razorbacks are 56-33 in that same time

    Arkansas is 678–456–40 all time

    South Carolina is 554–542–44 all time

    SO any way you slice it South Carolina is the scrub team when compared to Arkansas

  18. Brian Basher says: Apr 12, 2012 8:50 AM

    @getsome99

    And just in case you want to run your mouth some more

    Neither team has won an SEC championship

    Arkansas has won has won the SEC West 4 times

    South Carolina has one the SEC East 1 time

    Probably don’t need to spell “again” in all caps since Carolina has won their division only once.

    I agree with Pelini, Nebraska is definitely a destination job. It’s easy to forget about them right now but they are one of the best programs in the nation and I expect them to be back in the elite in the near future. I’m also an official “SEC Honk”.

  21. thraiderskin says: Apr 12, 2012 10:42 AM

    No Getsome, Ohio State did not beat the hogs recently, aparently that game did not occur. Even though I was at it, it turned out no one won. stupid tatoos.

    I wonder if this is payback for when Nebraska made a run at Houston Nutt? Arkansas wound up giving Nutt a pay raise due to Nebraska’s interest. Maybe Arkansas is throwing Bo Pelini’s name out there in order to make Nebraska do the same. Conspiracy theorists can only dream.

  24. Deb says: Apr 12, 2012 12:13 PM

    @getsome99 …

    Arkansas is not a “scrub” team. The Razorbacks finished sixth in the nation last year. Where was your team?

    As for Southern football, only a fool ridicules what he doesn’t understand. The first professional football and basketball teams didn’t make their way into the South until the late 1960s. College football was the sport that sustained a region through Depression, world wars, and the bigotry of belligerent boobs who still–nearly a century and a half after Appomattox–like to believe they’re somehow classier and more intelligent than people who happen to be born in the Southeast.

    So yes, although our internal rivalries are intense, we do take regional pride in the success of our conference.

    You hit the proverbial nail on the head, Deb. Northeastern snobs will never get it. The same goes for their attitudes towards the West Coast (particulary Cali) and the Midwest (“flyover country”). The insecurities of Northeasterners shine right through every time, particularly when it comes to athletics.

  27. barnesaintnoble says: Apr 12, 2012 4:52 PM

    SEC is dominating college football right now, that’s the truth. If you put the Big Ten against the SEC in terms of tradition, history, championships, etc. there really isn’t a comparison – the Big Ten would dominate. The SEC being this good is really something relatively new in a sport that goes back almost 150 years. People forget that.

    Go Arkansas Razorbacks!

    @getsome Jesus man we even beat the crap out of you Houston Nutt was here. South Carolina had one good yr. Arkansas has had many.

  31. Deb says: Apr 12, 2012 10:44 PM

    @hoggette …

    No problem … this situation would make anyone crazy!! But I think you’ll be better off in the long run. I love Saban, but if I found out he’d been texting some bimbo 90 times a day the week we lost to LSU, I’d be after him with a frying pan. How can you game-plan with your mind on something like that? Petrino was doing a good job at Arkansas, but it makes you wonder what he might have done if he’d been completely focused. You could end up with someone even better!
