Regardless, the Chips announced in a press release Saturday that five of its players have been suspended indefinitely for, of course, violating unspecified team rules. The un-fantastic five are: wide receiver Deon Butler, defensive back Kevin King, WR Danel Harris, tight end Joe Sawicki and running back Austin White.
Based on CMU’s press release -- “The university and athletics department are cooperating fully with local authorities to determine what further action is needed” -- an off-field legal issue is at the heart of the suspensions.
“CMU student-athletes are obligated to comply with a rigorous code of conduct that ensures they are proud representatives of this university and its local community,” said athletic director Dave Heeke in a statement. “If there is a breach of this standard, there will be disciplinary action.”
The Mount Pleasant Morning Sun wrote that "[c]alls to several Mt. Pleasant area police agencies on Saturday did not produce any information about the situation.” An email from CFT seeking comment as to whether a legal issue was involved in the punitive measures has not yet to see a response.
