Though he didn’t sign a formal contract in 2011, Michigan offensive coordinator Al Borges is getting a much better deal from U-M this year.
Thanks to an open records request from the Detroit Free Press, the details of Broges’ new three-year contract, signed in January, have been made public. Borges originally made $350,000 in 2011, but will see a nearly 100 percent increase to $650,000, and then increasing by $50,000 for each of the next two seasons.
Borges has a base salary of $250,000 with additional compensation starting at $300,000. He also will have a deferred-compensation account that will receive $100,000 each year of the contract. He also receives incentives for bowl game appearances ($10,000), Big Ten title game appearances ($39,000) and Big Ten titles ($65,000).
“The multiyear deal that we agreed to with Al is similar to the contract [defensive coordinator] Greg [Mattison] signed last year,” associate athletic director Dave Ablauf said. “The actual details of the employment contract speak for themselves.”
Even though Rich Rodriguez is gone, the Wolverines actually saw an increase -- albeit ever so slight -- in points per game in 2011. Borges has run a more pro-style offense in the past, but as long as Denard Robinson is taking snaps for U-M, there’s still going to be a lot of zone-read play calling.
