It’s official: Michigan State QB to miss spring game

One week after being labeled as “doubtful” for Michigan State’s spring game, quarterback Andrew Maxwell has been officially crossed off the game roster for this Saturday’s scrimmage.

Coach Mark Dantonio confirmed that Maxwell would be sitting out the spring game today.

Andrew will not play. Too much of a risk,” Dantonio said. “He might be able to play (but won’t).”

Maxwell sustained a sprained knee earlier this spring and his status has been up in the air for some time. Redshirt freshman Connor Cook will play quarterback for both teams on Saturday as QB depth for the Spartans is thin.

“You’d like to have a little more depth at the quarterback position than we currently have with one guy out,” Dantonio said. “But that’s the way we’ve sort of handled it here. We’ve always tried to have four quarterbacks on scholarship at once, maximum. And that leaves us a little light sometimes.”

Maxwell is expected to be back in time for voluntary summer workouts.
