Temple LB suspended after arrest on rape charges

An erstwhile member of the Temple Owls football program is facing a rather significant legal situation following an alleged incident over the Memorial Day weekend holiday, WPVI-TV in Philadelphia is reporting.

According to the television station, Owls linebacker Praise Martin-Oguike has been arrested on multiple charges that include aggravated assault, forcible rape, sexual assault, unlawful restraint and false imprisonment.  As a result of the charges, Martin-Oguike has been indefinitely suspended from the football team by head coach Steve Addazio, a school spokesperson to the station.

The alleged incident occurred the night of May 26 in a university dorm room, the details of which are more than little disturbing if they’re even remotely true:

Police say it was back on the night of Saturday, May 26, Memorial Day weekend, that a 21-year-old woman, a student at the university, alleges she was in Martin-Oguike’s fourth floor dorm room at Temple’s 1940 residence hall in the 1300 block of West Norris Street.

She claims the football player tried to kiss her and she told him no. The 21-year-old says she then tried to leave and Martin-Oguike allegedly grabbed her by the throat and dragged her into his bedroom where he allegedly raped and assaulted her.

She further states that he then took her downstairs and signed her out of the dormitory as if nothing had happened.

Finally, the victim says, a couple hours later, he text messaged her asking, “Are you gonna press charges?”

Another disturbing point connected to this incident is the fact that, according to two current Temple students, an email notification is normally sent out by the school to alert students of such an alleged crime.  In this case, however, no alert was sent.

Martin-Oguike was a two-star member of the Owls’ 2011 recruiting class, and played in seven games as a true freshman last season.

Two star athlete with zero stars for brains. On top of being pretty damn low class, he is stupid enough to text her, asking if she is going to press charges. He might as well confess and get it over with. I would say he has put a pretty big dent in his future plans for life, at the very least.

It will be interesting to find iut why Temple did not send out an alert. A mistake or protecting an athlete?

Kick him out of school ! He’s a bum.

Let me guess some liberal in Philly would claim racism by Temple if they sent out an alert that a black athlete raped a student. If it was a white athlete the alert would’ve been sent immediately.

She’s probably lying. She saw how much money Brian Banks’s accuser made after lying and sending him to prison, and the light bulb went off in her sick head.

If he is guilty, give me 5 – 7 minutes alone with him and he is left with a new anus, disfigured face and crawling for termite food.

“Kick him out of school ! He’s a bum.”

This is what friarjack61 says. Really? Rape is that trivial?

The man deserves due process for sure, but if this is proven to be true, school will be his least concern.

Steve Addazio did all he could do and the right thing was indefinitely suspending Mr. two star.If she was raped and went to a hospital they can take samples to see if they match his.

513guy your comments sound like those of a rapist! Well done you idiot. Can you imagine in that narrow little mind of yours the fear this woman went through when an extremely large man grabbed her by the throat and forceably raped her. Hope you do not have children or for that matter even a wife.

Combating rape and assault with rape and assault. Typical of a knuckle dragging Neanderthal.

This is a CFB site, but the suspension is the least significant thing about this story.

You all can give him a thumbs down all you want but he’s got a point. Only difference between rape and consentual sex is how she tells the story. We don’t know what went on in that bedroom.

There are a lot of rape allegations coming to light we need to pause and stop jumping to conclusions just because a person is arrested.

  13. woebegong says: Jun 5, 2012 12:57 PM

I am just curious. If it was a consensual act, why do you suppose he text her, wanting to know if she was going to report the incident?

First let remember that a young man who was a football player was just released from prison because the girl who accused him said she lied to be able to sue the school district for 1.5 million. This looks a lot worse but let the evidence convict him not public opinion.

That being said if he did it throw his @$$ in jail just like anyone else would be. If you are me did something like this it would be 10 years at least. Personally I think rape should be a capital crime with a minimum of 25 years up to life.

As the college football arrest season keeps on going…….
Anyine else find it ridiculous how many stories there are of college football players getting arrested during the offseason? I was a college kid to and I know what its like to be out having some fun but the amount of stories here ona dat to day basis of guys getting arrested should be raising some red flags.

Coaches need to start getting suspended for endangering the campus by bringing the scum on board.

  17. lbijake says: Jun 5, 2012 3:01 PM

Some men call the next day to make sure she got home okay and ask if she had a good time. Other men call nto ask if she is going to press charges. I guess it is a matter of upbringing.

  18. florida727 says: Jun 5, 2012 3:38 PM

    “Are you gonna press charges?”
Are you really that stupid? Thanks for the confession.

    “…no alert was sent.”
Is it just me, or does the word “cover-up” come to mind?

Selling those Girl Scout cookies door-to-door is risky business…Especially at that hour..

  20. olddawg60 says: Jun 5, 2012 4:29 PM

And this…It might be interesting, (possibly even comical) to ask Mr. Oguike if he can define the word, “consensual”..
My dad had a saying, “Consider the source…”

As a Temple alum I have been following this whole thing since the story broke. One thing I would point out is that this “Alert System” thing that keeps being brought up is not meant to be used in these types of cases but sounds like it was installed in case of something like what happened at Virginia Tech years ago, sounds like misinformed students talking to a news outlet that didn’t care to do any real work and research.

From a fan perspective Addazio seems to be making the right move, with so many good things going on in Temple Football they don’t need this kind of kid, the program was rebuilt on high class guys and giving men with troubled youths a chance to show they could be model citizens, you take that away by putting talent ahead of everything else and this team will start losing again.

Nothing like guilty until proven innocent
I’ve had at least 2 people I know be falsely accused of rape/sexual assault by pissed off females. It’s ashame but it happens a lot more than one would think

  23. goblue62 says: Jun 5, 2012 10:59 PM

Let the prosecutors prove up their case and a judge decide on legally competent evidence…

  24. emmagarcia05 says: Jun 6, 2012 1:40 AM

What a looser!!!! Doesn’t matter if your a athlete or a regular civilian rape is wrong!!!! He had the nerve to say “are you gunna press charges” if hes that stupid he shouldn’t be in college nor be out in the free world, hope he gets locked up for this shit!!! A smu track runner was brutality raped by some thugs in a van who kidnapped her they all got life in prison, hope he gets the proper punishment.

  25. dkhhuey says: Jun 12, 2012 7:26 PM

I guess a ‘thanks for a great time would have been a bit better for his case than ‘are you gonna to press charges’!!!
