MLB scout says drafted Florida State QB will play for ‘Noles

Yesterday, Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston was drafted in the 15th round of the MLB draft -- for baseball coverage, here’s a shameless plug for Hardball Talk -- by the Texas Rangers. But despite the opportunity to play professional baseball right away, it appears by at least one account that Winston will pursue football.

“I don’t think it’s a situation where we expect or hope that Jameis is not going to play football; he’s going to play football at Florida State,Kip Fagg, the Rangers’ director of amateur scouting, told ESPN Dallas. “There is a possibility that Jameis could come out and play baseball with the Texas Rangers in the offseason. So that’s kind of what we’re looking at right now.”

Winston was a highly coveted two-sport athlete from Hueytown, Ala., who committed to FSU this past signing period. However, he made more than a few fans hold their breath when he said he would push his commitment announcement past signing day. Two days later, though, he signed his National Letter of Intent, saying his “heart belongs to FSU.
