A.J. McCarron, Honey Badger get into Twitter brouhaha

Allstate BCS National Championship Game - LSU v Alabama Getty Images

Because it’s June and the following “exchange” happened between two members of prominent SEC West programs, we’re legally obligated to bring this up.

No, really. There’s fine print in our third-tier media rights which we’re happy with, by the way.

Anyway, trash talk between Alabama and LSU, the two participants from last year’s BCS championship game, isn’t limited to fan bases alone. Never one to keep his thoughts to himself, LSU cornerback Tyrann Mathieu took a direct shot at Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron on Twitter today regarding McCarron’s role in the Tide’s last national championship — which, of course, has since been removed.

But thanks to some screen shots from other media outlets, we were able to recreate the exchange.

“@10AJMcCarron everybody have a good game every now and then try having a great season back 2 back 2 BACK! DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIP NOT YOU.”

… to which McCarron replied…

Although Matheiu didn’t direct his next tweet at McCarron directly, he did end with a “highly favored in DEATH VALLEY!” tweet presumably referring to the initial two-point spread in favor of the Tigers in this year’s game against the Tide (which apparently constitutes heavy favorites).

Or, it could refer to the fact that August can’t get here fast enough.

Holy Shit Tyranne, You just know this exchange is goin to bring out the catty remarks from those Bama folks and you know how they hate us big time. I know we can all take what they dish out but there’s some that make it their mission in life to make other’s lives a livin nitemare as you well know. That one you and I’ve talked bout especially will come out fightin and won’t stop till they’ve done all they can to humiliate those of us they don’t care for and say they’re doin it all as smack. Well we know how far that got em at the end of this past season, do we not? By the way, great job at goin after McCarron and lettin him know he’s a human bein and not anymore than. See ya when I see ya.

TM was totally owed in January and he looked like a confused little girl playing! He is WAY overrated and he’s mad because he and the rest of LSU team were a total embarrassment to the SEC in January!

I`m not a Bama fan but i can say this Bama made y`all look bad.If Les Miles was a smart coach he would of pulled Jefferson and put in Lee and just might of made it a closer game.I figure them two had words and Les kept Lee out just to prove his point.imo Miles cared more about his point he must of made to Lee then he cared about a National Championship…

  6. suprmous says: Jun 11, 2012 9:06 PM

timh1955, what doesn’t make sense is somebody like you who doesn’t recognize the fact that Tyranne’s as good as he is and that somebody other than you might have an opinion. And for all of that one poster who downed my comment 5 times, beware because it can come back and bite you in the ass big time.

  7. suprmous says: Jun 11, 2012 9:08 PM

And oh how forgetful I am. Word has in on ESPN and the NFL Network that LSU has a defense that’s goin to be a power house again this year. Wonder how it is they can see it but armchair QBs miss the boat.

  8. latchbeam says: Jun 11, 2012 9:22 PM

    Honey Badger don’t care!!

  9. timh1955 says: Jun 11, 2012 9:37 PM

@supremous obviously I’m not the only one that thinks he is WAY overrated as there are currently 11 likes to my comment. Tell me what he did good in the January game! As a matter of fact tell me ANYTHING your guys did good in the January game and don’t brag about getting across the 50 yard line ONE time the ENTIRE game. Just admit it…..your team looked like a high school team playing an NFL team and it will be the same 11/3 as Bama is simply a much better team with a LOT better coach.

  10. suprmous says: Jun 11, 2012 10:05 PM

I do believe you need to have your eyes ck’d Bucko, the only thing I see with the #11 attached to it is where you were voted down by 11. There were circumstances that prevented a better played game and some of them originated from your so called “much better team with a LOT better coach”. In addition to that, your so called much better team ……. didn’t: have to play an extra game and be less prepared, play man to man coverage because they were busy holding Tyranne and Mo Clayburne to where they couldn’t move only to keep the 2 of em tied up, emotions from the bench spilled over onto the field and caused all hell to break loose. So now I’ve spoken and you can take your l’il nappy bragging ass back to get ready for the next go round. Oh and as far as you havin a better coach, whata joke. Just wait till somebody comes along with more $$ and he’ll leave Bama just like he did us, Miami, and everywhere else he’s darkened the door.

Before we get to anything else (and as a neutral Razorback fan, and yes we got our @$$ handed to us by both teams), McCarron claiming 14 national championships is a joke read it here http://spittingfire.wordpress.com/2008/01/13/alabamas-12-national-championships/

  25. reclinerqb says: Jun 12, 2012 8:51 AM

@timh1955 Arkansas has 1 football NC, 1 basketball NC, & a combined 40 NC’s between indoor/outdoor track and cross country; and we are equally proud of all of them.

I did not bring this up to start a “Comment fight”, just pointing out that the “14 National Championships” that many Alabama fans claim is factually inaccurate. You cannot go back and “retroactively” give NC’s, or if one of the 100 computer rankings used to formulate the BCS gives a team a NC, while 99 others don’t, then it doesnt count.

Since Reggie Bush was ineligible and USC had to “vacate” their wins with him, does that mean both Oklahoma (slaughtered by USC 55-19) and Auburn are both 2004 National Champions?

I am not trying to “dog” on Alabama, just trying to be objective and reasonable, that is why I said I was a Razorback fan, meaning I have no hog in this fight and am just using common sense.

  26. imforbigblue says: Jun 12, 2012 9:12 AM

Not a LSU or bama fan but after the butt whoop bama put on LSU how in the world can any LSU player talk any kind of crap SMH

  27. normtide says: Jun 12, 2012 10:37 AM

First off, imo they face each other on the field, wait to talk smack then. I have respect for LSU, it is one of my fav games Bama plays.

Second, last year is over. I promise you that Saban is not celebrating atm, he is looking to, and prepping for Michigan. Just as Miles has moved on and prepping for next year. I have no issue, even after a loss, when a player says his team is better then another. Thats exactly how they should think.

Best of luck to LSU, can’t wait! I would like to remind, traditionally, that Bama does well in death valley. LSU does wk I’m T town. Home team gets 3 points on s spread to start, so Vegas sees the game pretty even.

  28. normtide says: Jun 12, 2012 10:39 AM

Lsu does well in T town. Sorry, posting on my phone.

  29. davemock says: Jun 12, 2012 11:07 AM

Appearently they both need to be reminded how both games were won…..THE KICKERS…..those that could kick and those that could not… neither one of those 2 INDIVIDUALS waere a factor in either game……

  30. timh1955 says: Jun 12, 2012 11:14 AM

@davemock: The January game had an Alabama touchtown so Bama would have won even without the kickers.

  33. Deb says: Jun 12, 2012 12:44 PM

    @davemock …

When games are won by field goals, it doesn’t mean the teams simply lined up and kicked. A team has to drive the ball down the field to get within kicking range. A.J.’s poor play was a factor in the regular-season meeting; his excellent play and game management were factors in the title game.

Defensive play was a major factor in both games. Teams resort to FGs because an immovable force is keeping them from getting TDs. Reid’s INT for LSU in the regular-season was a game-changer and a terrific example of defensive instinct and hustle. In the championship game, Alabama allowed LSU across the 50 only once. It’s a shame in the stats-driven environment of Fantasy Football, more people don’t seem to appreciate the beauty of great defensive play.

  34. normtide says: Jun 12, 2012 12:48 PM

Deb- once again I state, if everyone loves offense, why does the arena league fail?

  35. Deb says: Jun 12, 2012 12:57 PM

Of course, you posted that link to start a comment fight. Someone like you always posts those links to start fights. Usually, though, they post to something more reliable than a blog by Justin the calculus student who rants about whatever pisses him off. Are you Justin, by chance? LOL

But here’s how it works: We know our team has won 14 titles since the 1920s. We also know that if you exclude the pre-WWII titles because you kids don’t think anything that happened before WWII should count … and you exclude the split titles because ties don’t count … then we still have way more titles than you.

    Have a nice day. :D

Tyrone Mathieu keep talking like you’re 6 foot 4. You’ll still show up 5 foot 8 on gameday and AJ will lob balls over your miniature head.

No more respect for the Honey Badger. He should have just kept his mouth shut and played ball.

  46. texbornlsufan says: Jun 13, 2012 10:24 AM

Those were the two most evenly matched teams in the History of College Football! They will again this year be very evenly matched and it most likly will be a defensive battle again.

Please LSU WON THE FIRST ONE AND ALABAMA WON THE SECOND AND MOST IMPORTANT ONE. Ask anyone who ever played the game if you win by 1 or 100 it’s a win is a WIN.

ONE IS THE RETURNING SEC CHAMP AND ONE IS THE RETURNING NATIONAL CHAMP AND THAT IN IT’S SELF IS VERY IMPRESSIVE.

We all need to get geared up for this years game and quit living the past. This years game is going to be something else….. Can’t wait

  47. packerbadger says: Jun 13, 2012 12:02 PM

I’m just amazed that Tyrone was able to actually type out some words. I’m guessing thats more typing than he’s done on all of his term papers he turned in at Least Smart University in the Somewhat Educated Conference. Its either that or he has grunt to type capability on his Dragon software.

  48. foreverlsu says: Jun 13, 2012 12:27 PM

  49. normtide says: Jun 13, 2012 12:32 PM

Fudge packer is mad cause his coach, barney rubble, is to busy crushing rocks to recruit.

  50. Deb says: Jun 13, 2012 12:46 PM

    @packerbadger …

As I’ve said on the pro side, nothing good has ever come from the union of football players and Twitter. Both Mathieu and McCarron should do their talking on the field. I’m a Bama fan and proud of our victory, but Tyrann and LSU still would have wiped the floor with your Badgers. And since your Packers have 11 SEC players on their current squad, McCarthy and company clearly have a pretty high opinion of the conference that’s produced six straight title winners.

  51. packerbadger says: Jun 13, 2012 4:35 PM

Great, you produce this and you produce that…how many of your players actually graduate? You guys may have won against the Badgers, may have; but you wouldn’t have “wiped the floor”. I’m sure you guys would have felt the effects of the best offensive line and the best running back tandem in college football.

  52. Deb says: Jun 13, 2012 5:14 PM

    @packerbadger …

Please allow me to introduce myself. Bama fan. We won the title. If your team was that great, you’d have won the title. Please allow me to welcome you to CFT–College Football Talk. The topic here is football, not graduation rates, although our player graduation rates have significantly increased under Coach Saban. Although I wish them the best, I really don’t care how many of those players graduate because the only degree relevant to my career is mine. In my experience on the blogs, people pull out these academic arguments when they lose games. When my team loses, I just say “Congratulations.”

  53. foreverlsu says: Jun 13, 2012 5:36 PM

Fudgepacker wants to discuss graduation rates. Okay, fine by me. Check out the link below.

    http://www.tidesport.org/RGRC/2011/2011%20FBS%20Bowl%20Study(FinalFinal).pdf

Hmmm. Looks like LSU (77%) and Alabama (69%) trump mighty Wisconsin (66%) when it comes to graduation success rates for football student athletes. For such a self-proclaimed smart guy, me thinks you should have done more research before letting your fat fingers do the typing.

Wisconsin has won the party school of the year how many years in a row?

Oh, and if you want to compare scores, we can do that too.

    Oregon 45, Wisconsin 38
    LSU 40, Oregon 20

  54. normtide says: Jun 13, 2012 5:46 PM

The speed rushers from Bama/LSU would dissect UW’s big o line. Our linebackers are bigger and faster then your “nations best two rb’s”. If you could not make the title game last year, in a down B1G, with the best qb you ever had, you may never. Now, move on to another excuse, maybe cold weather…
