Third Auburn shooting suspect turns himself into police

Tommy Dawson AP

“This has been an incredibly difficult 72 hours,” Auburn head coach Gene Chizik said earlier today in his first press conference since this weekend’s shooting that claimed the lives of two former players and wounded others.

The grief that Chizik and the Auburn community continue to share will not go away overnight, but perhaps now they will feel some sense of relief. Not 10 minutes after I posted Chizik’s comments, news regarding the third suspect connected to the shooting came across the wire.

WSFA reports that Desmonte Leonard, facing three counts of murder and two counts of assault, turned himself into authorities earlier this evening at the Montgomery Federal Courthouse. A law enforcement official told the Associated Press that police had arrested a man in connection to the shootings.

Local police were already reportedly prepared to hold a press conference at a little after 9 p.m. CT.

Leonard’s arrest comes one day after Montgomery police staged what would ultimately be a fruitless “standoff” at a home where Leonard was believed to be hiding. In the end, the location “turned out not to be correct,” FBI spokesman Douglas Astralaga told Reuters.

Two others were arrested yesterday in connection to the shootings, which claimed the lives of former Auburn players Ed Christian and Ladarious Phillips, as well as 20-year-old Demario Pitts. Wounded in the shootings were Auburn lineman Eric Mack Xavier Moss and John Robertson.

Thank God he’s in custody and no longer a threat to the general public. Maybe this will help comfort those grieving the loss of loved ones.

What is the thought process for this man to take this action? Arguing over a woman and now his life is basically ended.

At this point, why turn yourself in? Unless you are innocent or contrite, and I doubt either.

I would want the death penalty instead of wasting my life away in prison especially with the guilt of taking a life

If he gets the death penalty, they will spend 20 years debating if they should change their minds. He will only think about the next appeal.
I doubt he cares what he did. However, if he gets life without the possibility of parole he may have time to think. Who knows, he may someday care about the lives he took. I can only guess, but for now I figure all he cares about is what is going to happen to him.
I was taught to stay away from drinking parties and bars. Drinking is not necessarily bad in moderation, however, when was the last time anyone drank in moderation at a drinking party or a bar. Everyone has the right in America to do these things, but oh how horrible the consequences. What a waste of beautiful lives.

Seeing Leonards troubled past with a gun and this in Auburn all he could do was show how tough he was carrying a gun to prove he was tough.Kids like this think they can look beyond the law and do as they like to whom they want.I figured he would make an ending as Jessie James would go out in a blaze of glory. But this kid is not what he pretended to be and thats a tough guy. This all falls back on up bringing parents at some points not caring where their child is at night, some kids don`t even know who their parents are and only left to care for himself and get with the wrong crowd that becomes their family. This the way it went off over a girl,if she wanted to be with another then he should of walked away.Going to these players that imo are much bigger then he was he knew he needed a gun to get her back or to prove his point. Now it will be life in prison or death.I hope other kids that see this can see it as an example to what can happen to them and turn their lives around also.JMO.

    kozbee …

Sorry to be picky, but a glory-seeking comrade shot James in the back in his own home while he was unarmed and his wife and small children were in the next room. He didn’t seek to go out in a blaze of glory. Baby Face Nelson–who enjoyed killing people and took two FBI agents with him when he went–is a better fit for your point.

I’d love to think Leonard would become an object lesson for other kids who think carrying guns makes them tough guys … but I’m skeptical.

Never saw that movie! But I love the soundtrack. You can tell I spend too much time reading about outlaws, though :)

So glad this low life piece of shite is in custody. Guns don’t kill people stupid thoughtless thugs who think they are tough because they pull a trigger kill people. On that note, America has way to many guns floating around. It’s just as easy to get a hand gun as it is to get a bag of pot. And to think…. Pot is illegal and guns are legal. Freaked up man.
