Surprises in the Jerry Sandusky trial continue to occur on a daily basis. One day after former Penn State assistant Mike McQueary took the stand to testify, his father, John McQueary, did the same.
But what the elder McQueary said baffled lawyers.
Speaking briefly on the stand today, McQueary said he did not remember attending court for a preliminary hearing for former PSU vice president Gary Schultz and athletic director Tim Curley in Harrisburg on December 16, 2011. Both admins face perjury charges for their role in the Sandusky scandal.
“I was not in that courthouse to my knowledge,” McQueary said.
Except he was in the courthouse that day -- the featured image in this post is of him leaving the hearing -- and he testified.
McQueary’s statement was contradicted by court documents and attorney Karl Rominger seemed stunned when McQueary continued to deny knowledge of his attendance at the hearing. McQueary’s time on the stand ended shortly thereafter.
While under oath, however, McQueary said that Schultz told him that he had “heard noise about (allegations) before” 2001, when Mike McQueary allegedly saw something of a sexual nature between Sandusky and a young boy in the showers of an on-campus facility. According to the original grand jury indictment, Mike McQueary called John McQueary after he saw the alleged incident before going to former PSU coach Joe Paterno the next day.
Earlier this week, a report surfaced that Shultz had a “secret file” of Sandusky allegations.
