Murray State DE passes away at 19

We don’t dip into small college news too often, but unfortunately, the tragic and untimely death of a student-athlete has made some headlines.

Murray State announced on Friday that rising defensive end Jeffery Richard passed away on Thursday. He was just 19 years old.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Jeff,” coach Chris Hatcher said in a statement. “He was a fine young man and outstanding member of our football team. His departure from us is tragic and he will be missed greatly. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this very difficult time.”

No other details surrounding Richard’s passing were made available, though the Associated Press reports Richard died in his hometown of Elizabethtown, KY.

Richard appeared in all 11 games last season as a true freshman, starting the final three games of the season. He finished with 21 tackles, five tackles for loss and a sack.

Obviously, our sincerest condolences go out to Richard’s family, friends and all those affected by the loss.
