LSU’s “championship” rings celebrate second place

BCS Championship Football AP

Despite a 21-0 shutout at the hands of Alabama in the BCS championship game, LSU players received their “championship” rings recently.

The rings themselves are nice — you can see the images below — but there’s one peculiar part of the bling that, suffice to say, one wouldn’t normally see:

Boasting a “#2 Nationally” finish.

That’s not to say I’m scoffing at finishing second; the Tigers went undefeated in SEC play during the regular season and played for a BCS championship. There’s a lot to be proud of there. It’s just, well, different.

Either LSU is preaching the “good job, good effort” attitude, or the victim of some serious (self?) trolling.

    No points for second place.

    The plaque for the alternates is in the ladies room.

    I didn’t know they gave second place rings. If I was an LSU player I would be too embarrassed to wear a ring saying my team was #2. Did they also put the score (21-0) on the ring?

    So many “No Fear” t-shirt quips on one comment board.

    timh1955:

    Take a closer look at the second image around the “LSU” on the jewel: this is their SEC Championship rings. Though still, why anyone would want to put “#2 Nationally” on them is beyond me.

    But it probably won’t matter, as judging by how much value football players usually place on even more important rings, half of them will be in pawn shops or on eBay within 24 hours of them being handed out.

  9. barbeaux says: Jun 17, 2012 2:52 PM

    Haha that’s crazy kind of like handing out silver and bronze medals for 2nd and 3rd place. Should a business which ended up being ranked #2 behind its competitor just count the year as a complete waste? How many other teams and conferences boast about top 5 finishes year after year and use that as a recruiting point? Trolls are funny. None of you are wearing these rings so why care?

  10. foreverlsu says: Jun 17, 2012 3:26 PM

    So what’s the big deal, timh1955? Can you not read, smart guy? LSU was undisputed SEC champs and earned the rings. Sure Bama won the big one and I congratulate them but I have NO shame in LSU winning another SEC title. Some of you trolls are hilarious; where did your team finish nationally?

  11. Deb says: Jun 17, 2012 3:43 PM

    Serious respect for the way LSU handled the ring design. As mentioned, it’s their SEC Championship ring–one their players earned and deserved. Kudos to them for not designing a ring that implied by omission they’d won the whole enchilada–which is exactly what most teams would have done. This was a classy way of getting the team its due.

    Nothing wrong with winning and getting a SEC champ ring, but I would not need or want to be reminded that we did not finish out the season the way we wanted. Yes, everyone brags about top 5 finishes, but that is for recruiting not rings.

  14. mholdcraft says: Jun 17, 2012 4:27 PM

    This article is just a little stupid. The rings are SEC championship rings, not National Championship 2nd place rings. Alabama has the National Championship rings and you can bet if they had won the SEC they would be wearing the SEC rings too. The guy who wrote this article should go into politics, his logic would fit right in with those asses.

  15. timh1955 says: Jun 17, 2012 4:56 PM

    I am ok with having an SEC ring but it was weird they put #2 Nationally on the side of the ring.

  16. papabush88 says: Jun 17, 2012 4:59 PM

    @mholdcraft

    Relax. I think the author is just pointing out that its a little weird to be putting “2nd Nationally” on a ring…and rightfully so. Should’ve just kept it to SEC champions. Shoudlve just stressed that point, cuz they were/are SEC champs.

  17. statefan2013 says: Jun 17, 2012 5:00 PM

    Your either first or your last, LSU fans should be disappointed their school is doing this.

  18. papabush88 says: Jun 17, 2012 5:25 PM

    @statefan2013

    Well, that’s a little overboard. The only thing LSU fans should be disappointed in, is that 21-0 shutout. And I don’t mean that disrespectfully at all. On a stage like that, you can’t show up that small. Reminded me of USC vs Oklahoma, except Oklahoma scored something. I like LSU and respect what that program has done in the last 10 years, but that NC game was awful.

  19. timh1955 says: Jun 17, 2012 8:23 PM

    @foreverlsu

    Actually my team finished #1 as I have an undergraduate and graduate degree from Alabama. It’s ridiculous to put on a ring you are #2 in the country not to mention LSU was an embarrassment to the SEC in the NC game.

    Let me play this game too…
    Bama was an embarrassment for missing four field goals and shouldn’t have even been allowed to play in the NCG at all… LSU had nothing to prove in that game, they’ve already beaten them once already. LSU is the SEC West Champion… Where I go on that facts??

  22. normtide says: Jun 17, 2012 9:36 PM

    LSU had a chance to show Bama did not belong, and would have been known as one of the best teams ever. They couldn’t. Bama belonged their. As for the rings, I could not care less, I did not receive one nor pay for them. They can put what they want on them.

  23. cubano76 says: Jun 17, 2012 9:40 PM

  24. dawglb says: Jun 17, 2012 11:57 PM

  26. ironmike778 says: Jun 18, 2012 6:28 AM

    Rings for 2nd place? Weak. No way any of the players actually wear those things.

  27. norcalirish says: Jun 18, 2012 7:50 AM

    I lol’d at this almost as much as I did when I saw a 1973 “national championship” ring displayed in the Bear Bryant museum a couple years ago…almost.

    Say what you want, but at least LSU isn’t claiming phantom national championships *looks at Deb*.

    Anyways, they should give out a ring to both teams for the unwatchable game that destroyed college football. Enjoy the “playoffs”.

  28. stairwayto7 says: Jun 18, 2012 9:44 AM

    It’s better than erecting a statue of someone who spent one year (?) at your school and won a faux NC. That is what Auburn has done. These rings are classy and it was a legitimate way to handle their outstanding season.

  32. packerbadger says: Jun 18, 2012 11:02 AM

    LSU is the first loser! Even though they “graduate” a higher percentage of players than most schools; I wonder what it takes to “graduate” from a SEC (Somewhat Educated Conference) school. I say this as I notice that LSU defensive back scores a 4/50 on the wonderlic test. Even if you just guessed, you’d get higher than that. How come Morris Claiborne got only a 4 out of 50 on the Wonderlic Test? Because he took it! Do the football players down there major in basket weaving or how to be “space occupiers”?

  33. normtide says: Jun 18, 2012 12:07 PM

    I know they minor in crushing teams from the rust belt. Also, in creating fear in other fan bases. I swear, B1G schools have courses in making excuses as to why they are not relevant. Even the people born and raised in the rust belt want out, I.e. Lebron James. The rest of you are stuck and bitter for it. Keep dreaming of warm weather and ladies in sun dresses, while shoveling snow with big women in parkas…

  34. tilafoo says: Jun 18, 2012 12:14 PM

    Bama played a killer game in the NC, I won’t dare take that away from them. LSU played an even better game by beating Bama during the regular season in THEIR house. Sorry, Bama isn’t number one, neither is LSU..they are both #1.

  35. ancientcougar says: Jun 18, 2012 12:18 PM

  36. mholdcraft says: Jun 18, 2012 12:55 PM

    For Packerbadger:
    You can comment on Morris Claiborne’s Wonderlic score after you show me you grades in College and tell me how much you are making in your first year out of school. Claiborne can laugh at your comment all the way to his bank! He’ll probably make more in his rookie year that you’ll make in several decades or maybe even your whole life! SEC jealousy doesn’t play well from envious dolts.

  37. 11jlacy says: Jun 18, 2012 1:14 PM

    Nice ring!!!!!!

  38. timh1955 says: Jun 18, 2012 1:47 PM

    They both are not #1….Alabama is! In the NC game Bama totally owned LSU and it was total dominance the entire game. That wasn’t the fact in the regular season game in Nov. Both teams were closer to be equal although Bama did dominate most of the statistics of that game and should have won that one too. Lastly, the NC game was played and hour away from Baton Rouge and that’s as close to having home field advantage without playing on the actual home field. Bama is a MUCH better team than LSU in every area (talent, coaching, defense, offense) and will again dominate LSU in November 2012.

  39. mrwoodpecker1 says: Jun 18, 2012 5:15 PM

    WOW guys the SEC and Division I has finally done it (Unbelievable)…….we have gone to an “every little Timmy gets a trophy” system. To wear a second place ring is pathetic at its core….what kind of society thinks that is something to be proud of…..Crap guys…..put your Big Girl panties on and get back out on the feild and prove it…..COME ON!!!! LSU, Bama, USC dont matter it is a slap in the face to wear a 2nd place ring to a player.

  40. bullneck11 says: Jun 18, 2012 5:27 PM

    This is obviously LSU’s SEC Championship rings that they earned and are very deserving of and so what if they also mention they were # 2 nationally also.

    LSU is the ligitimate SEC Champion and they won the SEC fair and square so maybe a case could also be made to say why is Bama putting themselves up as # 1 in the country when they didn’t even win the SEC Championship.

    Maybe Bama aught to put 2nd in the SEC West on their BCS rings so they can be totally honest like LSU is doing.

    All you Bammers and other LSU haters seem to want to forget Bama’s loss to LSU during the regular season and just stake everything on the BCS as if to forget that game ever happened. But the game in Tuscaloosa is pretty much the win that gave LSU the SEC Championship.

    The BCS was just the second game played between the two teams and they were both tied at 1-1 last year.

    Alabama’s BCS Championship is just as tarnished as LSU’s SEC Championship and Bama should be ashamed of boasting it’s greatness when they actually finished 2nd in the SEC West to LSU during the regular season.

  41. thegamecocker says: Jun 18, 2012 5:38 PM

    @bullneck11

    I’ve got no dog in this fight but ‘Bama went to New Orleans and put a whuppin’ on LSU. It was as close to a home game for the Bayou Bengals as possible without it being in Baton Rouge. The Tigers’ played hard but got beat 21-0. They lost the NC game therefore they are NOT the NC. In the eyes of 99% of college football fans, ‘Bama won fair and square. LSU is the SEC Champs as Georgia is the East Division Champs even though the South Carolina Fighting Gamecocks beat them in Athens last year. That is just the way it goes so that is all.

  42. normtide says: Jun 18, 2012 5:42 PM

    How is either tarnished? That makes no sense. Lsu is the legit SEC champ, Bama won the NC game. I will even say that around here, the SEC champ is as big as the NC. The fans I talk with in real life, not an anonymous blog, see it just that way. A lot of my in-laws are huge LSU fans, and they see it that way. Bama and LSU were far and away the best two teams. LSU was out coached in the title game and thats rough on those kids playing, but it happens. It has happenend to Saban before. Thats football. But, I see nothing tarnished.

  43. thegamecocker says: Jun 18, 2012 5:46 PM

    @normtide

    There you go. Absolutely spot on. The two best teams played a game for the NC and the Alabama Crinson Tide WON THAT GAME! Period end of report! ‘Bama = 2011 National Champs

  44. jrillah10 says: Jun 18, 2012 9:27 PM

    @thegamecocker

    You couldn’t help yourself. You had to bring up Auburn in an article that had nothing to do with them. Are you still upset from that loss last year at home? Or are you still upset about that ass beating you took in the SEC title game 2 years ago? Get a life! Oh and when your beloved gamecock smokers actually win a big game, then run your mouth. Tool.

  45. thegamecocker says: Jun 18, 2012 9:40 PM

    @jrillah10

    I always do bring up cheating Auburn any opportunity I can. I wasn’t upset about our loss to Auburn last year. I am upset about the ineligible player Auburn used the year before. A person WHO NEVER ATTENDED A CLASS AT AUBURN; Chisek made sure he would be protected, insulated to make sure he never met another Auburn regular student because he was afraid the moron would get in trouble. A low-life family who was thrown out of U. of Florida for stealing and cheating on tests. You’re an idiot and Auburn’s NC was a fraud. And I’m not the only one who feels that way. Now get lost you moron!

  46. jrillah10 says: Jun 18, 2012 9:48 PM

    @thegamecocker

    It’s funny how you bring up cheating. Google your garbage schools history and go from there. Don’t be upset because your team can’t sniff the NC game cheating or otherwise. You’re pathetic. The fact that you feel it’s a fraud is irrelevant. And you know for a fact he never attended class, right? Get a life, loser.

  47. suprmous says: Jun 18, 2012 10:10 PM

    I know I said I was leaving but damn it I just have to come back with somethin to say bout this. There’s plenty to be said good and bad about this series and us the fans who support the 2 teams, either you’re die hard in the wool a Tide fan or you’re a Swamp Tiger fan. These 2 teams have a history and some of it isn’t somethin to be proud of but some of us have taken exception to that: you can talk your smack, brow beat other fans in your speeches to others if others and their comments are coherent as well as makin fun of the way they talk, you can be biased in your thinkin, but still some team has to win and one has to lose and we’ll all still be fans of the team we support. When those that insist on callin others names and screamin at others they find it disgraceful if it’s done to them but yet they continue to sit and do it. Some have been nice to forgive and God bless em for that. Stats are recorded thruout a game whether right or wrong and the same goes for us as people but at least we have the power within ourselves to change. But I dare say that some will because of their attitudes and I for one have taken steps whether some wanna believe it or not. Lots of luck to your respective teams in the upcomin season.

    So I’m always on your mind, huh? How sweet. And you were hanging out at the Bear Bryant Museum? Interesting vacation spot for a Notre Dame fan. Speaking of phantom championships … how ’bout the infamous ’66 Irish? Even if you were okay with politicizing the sport and squeezing out Bama, I’m sure Michigan State still smarts over that screwing. But we all know how fortune shined on the Chosen Ones … until their recent irrelevance.

    Always so nice taking taking these little journeys through football history with you :D

  49. Deb says: Jun 18, 2012 10:40 PM

    It’s really not complicated. The title winner is the winner of the title game. New England and the Giants met in the regular season, too. But no one suggested the Super Bowl would be irrelevant, tarnished, blah, blah, blah. The title winner is the winner of the title game. Very simple.

    Just curious … what was your Wonderlic score?

  50. timh1955 says: Jun 18, 2012 10:41 PM

    Deb – Good response. I wasn’t even going to waste my time responding to a ND whiner because like you said they are irrelevant and have been for many years and they are a team everyone puts on their schedule now because it’s a high probability win. Their glory days are long gone.

    LOL you’re smoking crack. Bama was not the better team. LSU whooped Bama on Bama’s home field, the stats were in favor of LSU. We owned them that game like they owned LSU in the NC. Clearly you are going off personal feelings rather than reality if you think Bama is a “much better team” …your argument is laughable. Thank you for that.

  55. timh1955 says: Jun 19, 2012 11:39 AM

    If you think LSU owned Bama in the first game you are a complete idiot! LSU won by three points in overtime and Bama should have won the game as they beat themselves. In the NC game it was total dominance the entire game. You obviously know very little about college football but thanks for looking like a total fool on this board.

I’m glad you see that you think its good to show kids its ok to have a 1:1,000,000 chance of becoming a pro football player making lots of money and being dumber than a sack of hammers; rather than to get a good education and be a student athlete at the same time. Thats why Alabama and Louisiana are at the bottom of the education barrel. Just look at the SAT/ACT test scores of the kids down there. Dumb and dumber.

  57. mrwoodpecker1 says: Jun 19, 2012 2:32 PM

    I am not a bamer but I had to jump in here. Who is smoking Crack? Sounds like you! Here are the stats for the Nov 5 game for all to see. Now Dumb Ass, what stat favored LSU? The better team was obviously Bama. It is better for you to keep your mouth shut and let people think you are stupid because not you are exposed.

    LSU ALA
    1st Downs 15 17
    Total Yards 229 347
    Passing 91 199
    Rushing 96 148
    Penalties 7-56 6-73
    3rd Down Conversions 3-11 5-13
    4th Down Conversions 0-0 0-0
    Turnovers 2 2
    Possession 29:54 30:06

  58. papabush88 says: Jun 19, 2012 2:51 PM

    The only stat that really matters is that Bama is National Champions.
    Bottom line is that both of the games that these two teams played in were some of the worst games I’ve ever watched. Props to their respective defenses, but the offenses were terrible. Richardson only got player of the game because he scored a TD in garbage time. The real player of the game was Alabama’s kicker. That speaks volumes to the level of offense that was out there. If you didn’t think an offense could perform worse than Alabama, I give you LSU and Jamarcus, I mean, Jordan Jefferson.
    The flip side is that yes, LSU is the champion of the SEC, but Alabama was always the better team and they proved that by “dominating” in the NC game.
    To all the LSU fans, you’re doing yourselves a disservice by saying you were better than Alabama. You had a great season, going undefeated, but I think you would have rather won the 2nd matchup rather than the first. You could make arguments as to whether Alabama belonged there, but the fact of the matter is that both teams were good and deserved to be there more so than others like Oklahoma and Oregon. in any event, LSU and Alabama were both great teams, but only one could win the NC and that was Alabama.

  66. caliguy58 says: Jun 22, 2012 4:18 PM

    LSU players should be proud to wear their rings, which symbolize an outright win of the SEC championship. LSU went 8-0 during the regular season beating Alabama and giving Georgia a good whipping in the conference championship game. I don’t know of any other football team that can claim such an accomplishment, including Alabama that got beat by LSU on its home field. LSU finished the season 13 – 1 better than Alabama’s record of 12 – 1. So, all of those jealous morons who want to belittle LSU’s accomplishment should sit back quietly and quit showing their jealousy. It certainly doesn’t make them or the teams they support look good.

  67. thegamecocker says: Jun 22, 2012 5:30 PM

    @caliguy58

    No one is saying the rings are non- deserving. The issue is putting #2 on the ring for ranking 2nd after losing the National Championship game. No one is jealous. I think you may not understand the issue. I hope this makes it clear for you.

  68. timh1955 says: Jun 22, 2012 5:41 PM

    @caliguy58

    LSU got the crap beat out of them by Bama and Bama was obviously a much better team than LSU but if LSU wants to wear a ring announcing they are #2 in the nation that’s fine with me. It goes along with everything else weird that Les Miles has done.

    ROLL TIDE!!!

  69. papabush88 says: Jun 22, 2012 5:42 PM

    I don’t think people are jealous of a team that was shut out 21-0. The only team people should be jealous of is Alabama cuz they won it all. No one is jealous of Oklahoma City Thunder losing to the Heat. Everyone is jealous of the Heat. LSU accomplished some great feats, but didn’t perform when it mattered most. They are SEC champions. I wouldn’t want my team to put 2nd nationally on their rings. Guess its just my opinion.

  70. Deb says: Jun 22, 2012 7:28 PM

    @caliguy58 …

    The guy who wrote this article went to North Texas, and the commentary on the ring doesn’t have anything to do with Alabama. Our rings have NATIONAL CHAMPIONS on them. So no, we’re not jealous. Was that idiotic comment supposed to be you defending LSU? As they say, with friends like you, who needs enemies?
