Boise State caused a slight kerfuffle among media members last month during Big East spring meetings when athletic director Mark Coyle denied any conversations with the Mountain West about staying in the Broncos’ current home.
By itself, that’s no biggie -- except for the fact that the MWC released a statement in response claiming the league had “in-depth discussions” with the Broncos about staying -- and the school still appears to be on track for Big East inclusion by summer 2013, as expected.
But the school confirmed to the Idaho Statesman through an open records request that the school’s general counsel conducted “correspondence and discussions with the Mountain West” about remaining in the league, which is contrary to Coyle’s remarks during Big East spring meetings. However, school refused to release any documents associated with any of said discussions or potential offers (the MWC previous stated it would consider revenue distribution based on on-field performance, which would favor BSU).
Shocking, I know. But, who could blame the Broncos for having reservations about joining the Big East, which has yet to officially nail down a media rights deal. That’s not even including the elimination of AQ status, the ever-(d)evolving playoff format discussions or what to do with non-football sports. The bottom line is there was a lot for Boise to consider. To not explore all options would have been the more surprising move.
