Butch Davis’ son to be a Tar Heel walk-on

During his high school playing days in the state, Drew Davis wanted to play for his father at North Carolina.

Well, one out of two ain’t bad.

Davis’ mother and father confirmed to the Associated Press Monday that their son has enrolled at UNC and will be a walk-on with the Tar Heels football program. Davis, a quarterback who was rated as a three-star recruit last year, will play for Larry Fedora, who ultimately replaced Butch Davis following his firing shortly before the start of the 2011 season amidst the school’s twin impermissible benefits/academics scandals.

Davis’ parents said that their son was concerned how they would feel about his school choice, given the circumstances of the elder Davis’ departure, but they simply want what’s best for their son.

“I think he was concerned about how we’d feel,” Tammy Davis told the AP. “But we just kept reiterating that it was his decision.”

“We’re parents,” Butch Davis said. “As much as anything else, you want what’s best for your child. This is what he wishes to do and we’re going to support him.”

Drew Davis was coached in high school by Bill Renner, who is the father of UNC starting QB Bryn Renner. The son had also considered Miami, where his father also once coached.

“We’ll get him in the program, develop him and see where that goes from there,” Fedora said. “I look forward to it. Really for us, we’ve got 10 or 12 walk-ons coming into the program. He’s just one of the guys and he’ll be treated the same way.”

Shortly after Davis was canned, UNC’s president committed a secondary violation involving Drew Davis, mentioning that he had received a scholarship offer from his father. That is an NCAA no-no.
