Report: Five-star Gator signee close to clearing admissions hurdle

Jonathan Bullard

Normally this topic wouldn’t even be remotely worthy of a post.  Thanks to events of late — and additional rumors that have been spawned — it is.

Earlier this week it was reported that four-star Florida recruit Dante Phillips was denied admission to Florida due to some type of admissions issue related to academics.  As speculation swirled that something similar could befall a more-hyped defensive line signee, that’s all but officially been put to rest.

On his Twitter account Thursday night, Jonathan Bullard posted that (translation ahead) he had a very positive conversation with head coach Will Muschamp and that he’s cleared the admissions hurdle.  In its report, however, the Gainesville Sun‘s response was decidedly tepid, writing that “Bullard is close to being cleared academically to enroll.”

The Sun goes on to note that, while the defensive end’s transcripts were cleared by UF a week ago, the athletic department is “still was waiting on word from the NCAA clearinghouse before he could enroll.”

When a decision from the clearinghouse is expected is unknown.

Bullard was rated as the No. 1 strongside defensive end and the No. 6 player at any position in the Class of 2012 by  Suffice to say, he will be expected to have an immediate impact on Muschamp’s defense.

To clarify: NCAA requirements are the *minimum* to attend a D1 institution. So if you pass the NCAA requirements, your last hurdle is the individual school requirements.

Dante Phillips passed the NCAA minimum but “apparently” not UF’s. Bullard has passed UF’s, but hasn’t met the NCAA minimum yet.

Translation: UF didn’t want Phillips anymore and used admissions as an excuse to offload him. UF *does* want Bullard and he will enroll as soon as he meets the NCAA minimum.

Translation to the TX ‘cane who’s begging for Phillips to become a Hurricane- if you can fog a mirror, you can get into the “U”.

The fact is that none of these top recruits are geniuses, so all you hope for is that they can some how skim by academically and not be a felon yet.

Sadly, you need these talented guys, but they are generally marginal academically, and it is always a risky undertaking to sign them.

I do agree with ATXCANE’s evaluation of the situation. Very good.

This would never happen under Urban. Phillips would have been admitted no problem. Urban doesn’t care if they are illiterates, thieves, criminals, drunk drivers, woman beaters or rapists, just as long as they can play.
