Though unexpectedly denied admission to Florida because of an academic issue, defensive tackle Dante Phillips will stay in the SEC East.
Phillips’ new Twitter handle is @knoxvillebound — subtle, I know — and the (sort of) former Gator tweeted that Knoxville “might be my new home.” Phillips also said he was considering Western Kentucky and UM (presumably Miami).
Zach Abolverdi of the Gainesville Sun tweeted that he expected Phillips to sign with the Vols.
Phillips was a four-star member of UF’s 2012 recruiting class, according to Rivals.com.
come kid you will love it here in Knoxville
Are the Vols’ standards that far below FL?
Woohoo! Thanks Moosechops!
@ roundup – Florida HS grads with a 4.5, and Prez of the Chess Club, Debate Team, and School Paper on their resume have an easier time getting into Harvard and Cornell than they do UF. I read these stories all the time. I dont know what the issue is here because the NCAA had already cleared the kid.
Not complaining either as long as he winds up in Knoxville, they said he was already over 300 for his visit last week.

UF is a good school but lets not stretch things too far here. Getting into Harvard, Yale, etc is a crap shoot unless generations of your family has gone there or has made a sizeable donation.
In terms of kids having a 4.5 or whatever, grade inflation is an entirely different debate but that would equate to about a 3.2-3.5 HS GPA only 20 years ago.
I was reading he can’t get in to Miami either because of his grades. Also was reading that the only reason UF didn’t allow him was because he was an Urban Meyer kid. Not Muschamp.
So what better way to make yourself look better than to say Academics. Fowler and Bullard have WORSE grades than this kid but they’re Muschamp guys so they’ll bend the rules for them.
Ah, the ess-eee-see … where schools will actually race to the bottom academically as long as a kid can run fast. How long before we hear coaches begging kids to “come to LSU, we’ve got the nicest drool bibs in the league”…
