Getty ImagesBelieve it or not, there’s news happening in the world of college football that doesn’t involve Penn State today.
Unfortunately, it’s more bad news for yet another Big Ten school.
In a statement released Monday afternoon, Michigan head coach Brady Hoke confirmed that running back Fitz Toussaint has been indefinitely suspended after making a “poor decision.” That poor decision apparently stemmed from a drunk-driving charge over the weekend.
“Fitz made a poor decision and has been suspended indefinitely because of that action,” Hoke said in a statement. “There are expectations that come with being a football student-athlete at the University of Michigan and those responsibilities were not met in this instance.
“We will use this as an opportunity to educate Fitz and make sure he understands the high standards that we have established within our program.”
It’s unclear if the suspension will bleed into the season opener against defending national champ Alabama, although that’s a very realistic possibility.
According to SalinePatch.com, Toussaint was arrested late Saturday night in downtown Ann Arbor and charged with operating a vehicle while impaired. The initial stop, part of a joint drunk driving detail, was due to a traffic violation, with a subsequent breathalyzer revealing the back was over the .08 legal limit.
How far over the limit was not divulged.
In starting 11 games last season, Toussaint led all UM running backs in rushing yards (1,041) and rushing touchdowns (nine).
Now that Stonum is gone, I thought Michigan would be done with these types of issues. Guess not…
I wondering if Coach Hoke will be like SEC coaches and make him sit out a quarter or so of the opener.
Man. Too bad he’s not a buckeye or urban would’ve promoted him to captain.
Dumb decision kid. Just has to win withou you. Go blue.
Trouble in the cold country.
First offense – but make him feel it.
Keep the heat on Coach Hoke.
Go BLUE
Damn Fitz!
Good job coach.
Go Blue!
If he were a buckeye he would have lost his scholarship like stoneburner and Mewhort. Until Urban shows that he isn’t going to be a stickler at Ohio State I think people need to get off his back. The penalties given out at Florida were part of the SEC and Florida culture he has already shown in his short time at Ohio State he is going to be no nonsense and until he shows otherwise leave it be.

I guess if Urban were your coach, you’d have a whole slew of ‘captians,’ huh?

They should get the death penalty!!

@angel,
What’s a captian?
And if you read that report you linked it states clearly that it has not been verified. That’s usually pretty important in, you know, determining guilt.
Typical Michigan player…
@parrothead
Sorry, fat fingers and in a hurry. Good catch! I am glad I was able to distract you from your teams current legal issues.
(And I did not use the correct possessive of ‘team’ on purpose cause I am an internet grammar rebel!)
If this was the SEC or Oregon, he’d be punished by having to run an extra few laps… around the end zone.
If he was a Buckeye he would be done for the season… Hoke will suspend him for a quarter and make him a captain.
