After keeping silent on the subject for all of spring, Texas coach Mack Brown tipped his hold ‘em hand ever so slightly during Big 12 media days.
The Longhorns played two quarterbacks last season, Case McCoy and David Ash, neither of whom played particularly well at any point. But Ash seemed to gain some momentum after Texas won the Holiday Bowl over Cal and again appeared to have the upper hand during UT’s spring game.
The position battle, Brown said, should become clearer during preseason camp.
“We have two older guys who have been through the offense. They both won significant games. So we’re coming in at a much better place,” Brown explained. “They left spring practice even, and we should have a great battle this preseason.”
Brown added that battles like these usually take care of themselves, whether through injury or performance. One would think that separation is going to swing in Ash’s favor.
Even if it doesn’t, Brown’s going to have to make a choice eventually, though by his own words this is a matter that “can’t be forced.”
“I feel like one of those guys will separate themselves this camp,” Brown said.
He won’t say so officially, but I know I"m not alone in thinking Ash is going to be the guy eventually.
