I am happy for the deal of (8) years through 2020 for O’Brien. Heck – how bad could he be if he has been in the NFL (even though he was with Belichick) and other CFB teams? I think it is honorable to the school and the players that he even took the job. He’ll be paid handsomely, but my goodness, he will probably have the most difficult task to manage for the coming year and beyond – especially pulling the team out of the pit of hell, and reshaping the team that has already LOST many top-notch players and changing the team & school’s image. (Yes – no escape clause is a considerable issue as well)
I’m enjoying this type of set of article comments on this subject rather than seeing all the ‘hate mail with mud & dung’ on blaming PATERNO ONLY, instead of reading the Freeh report thoroughly to find that it was more focused on the BIG FOUR, and not even mentioning the BIGGEST CRIMINAL of all – SANDUSTKY. I’m glad we’re done with all of that stuff. O’Brien, no doubt – will be the BIG MAN on campus moving forward.

Probably the smartest move this university’s leadership has made in 14 years! I’ve been listening to B’OB over the last few days and he has been impressive! I’m not sure how he will perform over the next few years but he seems to have his act together and is the man PSU needs at the helm right now.

That little clause earned O’Brien $9.2 million when they handed down the sanctions.

Instead of having a contract that was extended in case of sanctions, he should of had an escapes clause. When Penn State starts to turn the corner in 7 to 8 years, they are going to fire this guy and get the hottest coach going to get them back to “glory”. WE ARE PEDO STATE!

That makes more sense… I couldn’t understand why he would have agreed to a contract without an out provision in the case of suspension.mm

Turns out he traded an out for a few extra million and soke damn good job security.

Seems like a fair deal in return for some stability in the program.

Time will tell what kind of coach O’Brien will be. Penn State had better hope he doesn’t fall into the category of the other Pats assistants that left New England for head coaching jobs……Charlie Weis, Romeo Crennel, Josh McDaniels, Eric Mangini. They were all collosal busts after they left the Belichick system.

Charlie Weis is arguably the biggest and most overrated college football head coaching bust in FBS history.

Hopefully when Minnesota plays Penn State we won’t have to sit through interviews with O’Brien gushing over Tom Brady like we did when Weis was at Notre Dame.

Freeh report amended for factual errors:

The original Freeh report states that Curley met with Sandusky in 1998, after campus police and state child welfare authorities launched an investigation that resulted in no criminal charges. Today’s correction notes that that meeting actually took place in 2001.

All that changes is proof that curley may have not known bout 1998 and also that THE FREEH REPORT IS CLEARLY NOT A THOROUGH AND OBJECTIVE REPORT.

Penn State gets hit with $60 million in fines from the NCAA, then $13 million from the Big Ten. Add to that price tag another likely $100 million in civil suits…

Penn State better hope O’Brien works out as a head coach because, if he doesn’t, it’ll be a nice chunk of change to buy out a contract that far down the line.

But what’s a quarter of a billion dollars these days anyway, right?
