Even as USC courts a player on the offensive side of the ball who could bolster its title aspirations, a current player on the other side of the ball has reportedly suffered an injury that could prove costly.
ESPNLosAngeles.com reported very early Friday morning that defensive end Devon Kennard suffered a torn pectoral muscle during a weightlifting session recently. A source close to the player told the website that Kennard is expected to miss at least 2-3 months and could miss the entire season, depending on the extent of the injury.
The senior is expected to undergo surgery at some point next week.
USC has yet to address the injury or Kennard’s status for the upcoming season.
The loss of Kennard to a unit that’s already thin depth-wise would be significant, with the website writing that it would be “a crushing blow.” The Orange County Register wrote that it “would be a big blow to USC’s championship aspirations.”
After an injury-plagued start to his USC career, Kennard came out of spring practice as one of the starters at end.
