Poll: the preseason No. 1 team should’ve been…

Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Saban holds the BCS trophy after defeating the LSU Tigers during their NCAA BCS National Championship college football game in New Orleans

You smell that?  Yep, the 2012 season is right around the corner.

The coaches’ preseason Top 25 is highlighted by, as expected, the SEC, with five of the conference’s seven teams in the Top 25 littered among the Top 10.

LSU and Alabama, the two teams that battled for the 2011 BcS title, are ranked 1-2 by the coaches, with No. 3 USC the only other team to receive first-place votes from the coaches.

CFT’s preseason Top 25 disagrees with the coaches — especially as it pertains to the Top 5 — and is closer in line with the AP’s poll, which has the Trojans leading the way.

So, what do y’all think?  Who should’ve been voted No. 1 before any games have been played and camps have barely started?  Vote below and sound off in the comments below that.

Lots of support for Phil Knight’s favorite team…I think another team further down south in the PAC 12 actually has a better chance of unseating the SEC in the championship game. No disrespect to the SEC…I just think the best teams in the confederacy are gonna take turns beating each other up this year. The Big XII is a year away from playing for it all.

I’m going to ask again… Why should LSU be number one over Bama? I am asking an honest question here, not taking swipes.

It has been proven over the years the COaches Poll is a dumb poll where coaches do not vote on talent and possibilities. They vote on peer pressure and what they read in the sports blogs, newspapers and hear on ESPN. SEC dominance is pure inbread backscratching…

  5. normtide says: Aug 2, 2012 1:09 PM

Well kat, what is it when the sec wins the title games? Fear makes you say stupid things.

  6. alligatorsnapper says: Aug 2, 2012 1:15 PM

Notre Dame should have been #1. That would have clearly demonstrated the absurdity of pre-season polls and the enduring favoritism for the Irish in polls and rankings. This way they would fall even farther out of the top 25 after a few games.

Seriously, the poll is so close, any one of the top 5 or so could and maybe should be the top 1. Playing the games will determine the winners so let us get on with it!

  7. thekatman says: Aug 2, 2012 1:24 PM

normtide, do you always lick your own post?

  8. normtide says: Aug 2, 2012 1:31 PM

I neither “lick” nor “like” my post. Not sure which you ment. Tbh, I never pay attention to the thumbs. The truth is the truth, regardless of who likes, or licks, it.

The real answer is that there shouldn’t be a pre-season number one because such things distort the rest of the season. No poll of consequence should be released until at least the season’s midway point. An early high ranking prejudices our feelings about a team a certain way, just like an early low ranking one does.

Let’s say Michigan State comes out and runs the table in the Big Ten and does so in convincing fashion. While at the same time USC and LSU go undefeated, we all know what team is going to left out in the cold, the one starting the season ranked at #13. They could win every game by 20 points and the taint of “starting lower” would never get them over the hump. (Remember when this happened to Auburn?)

Polls are fun, but it sucks that this useless pre-season exercise counts a whole month away from any kick-offs.

  12. sparty0n says: Aug 2, 2012 2:31 PM

Why is Ann Arbor Community College even an option in the poll. They don’t have the weak schedule of last year and they still have a RB/WR playing QB.

At BEST they will finish 8-4, while 6-6 is more likely.

  13. 50milessouthofdetroit says: Aug 2, 2012 2:59 PM

I’m guessing that Sparty couldn’t handle the fact that Lansing Jr. High wasn’t an option.

  14. sparty0n says: Aug 2, 2012 3:17 PM

I just picked this up on another site and thought it was worth sharing

    MSU -
    2010 USA Today Preseason poll – 40th / Result – 11-2 Final Ranking – 14th
    2011 USA Today Preseason poll – 19th / Result – 11-3 Final Ranking – 10th
    2012 USA Today Preseason poll – 13th / Result – ??-? Final Ranking ???

  15. myopinionisrighterthanyours says: Aug 2, 2012 3:21 PM

sportsinhd already hit on this well, but I’ll repeat it. The preseason number 1 should be noone, because there shouldn’t be preseason polls. The first poll should be done after a month’s worth of games are played.

  16. myopinionisrighterthanyours says: Aug 2, 2012 3:24 PM

    @sparty:
Another good demonstration of how absurd preseason polls are. I will warn, though, that past performance is not an indicator of future results. Just means the Spartans were underrated the past two years.

  17. rsmeans says: Aug 2, 2012 3:29 PM

The coaches poll is far more realistic than the other preseason polls i have seen. Still I think USC is way overrated. I would have ranked them about 12th. The game in Baton Rouge on November 3, 2012 will almost certainly determine the national champion.

  18. trojan33sc says: Aug 2, 2012 4:14 PM

Are you kidding me? USC should and WILL be ranked # 1 by the end of the season or at the very least heading to the National Championship Game. Bama & LSU don’t even know how to complete a forward pass. (please save the pseudo defense excuse for why neither team can score a touchdown when it counts” GET OUT THE HATERAIDE, WE ARE BACK !! FIGHT ON !!!

  19. dcole001 says: Aug 2, 2012 4:43 PM

I believe in the saying “To be the Man you have to Beat the Man.” Which basically means until Alabama loses they should be Ranked #1. Consider that a benefit from winning the previous Championship.

  20. thefiesty1 says: Aug 2, 2012 4:58 PM

How about NO poll until after week five? Non-Con games with weak sisters doesn’t mean much in the grand scheme of things. Get a couple of real games in, then come out with a poll.

  21. kiopta1 says: Aug 2, 2012 5:02 PM

I am so ready for some football…thank God the Olympics are this year cause this summer would have suck for me sports wise.

  22. omniusprime says: Aug 2, 2012 5:55 PM

Sad to see SEC trash at the top of the coach’s poll. The NCAA pampers these SEC schools so they don’t get punished when they break NCAA rules. Last season’s worthless SEC game was not a national championship game, it was trash that wasn’t worth seeing and I skipped watching it. Time for a real national championship game instead of the BCS garbage we’ve been force fed for so long where SEC schools get preferential treatment.

    USC is #1!!!!!!

  23. pulpfictionado says: Aug 2, 2012 6:21 PM

“Who should’ve been voted No. 1 before any games have been played and camps have barely started?”

    Uh, nobody.

what are preseason polls supposed to be?
    Are they predictive?

    POPULARITY CONTEST!

  24. pulpfictionado says: Aug 2, 2012 6:26 PM

RSmeans, the Coaches’ poll might be more legitimate if all 124 coaches voted

  25. thecrazyasianinseccountry says: Aug 2, 2012 6:46 PM

    @omniusprime…
Well if we’re trash, then you and everybody in the PAC12 are a bunch of poop-poop heads!!
    Gotcha!! Now what?

  26. hippiedriver2 says: Aug 2, 2012 6:58 PM

Bama but you can’t really tell until we play 4 or 5 games

  27. rsmeans says: Aug 2, 2012 7:07 PM

In the SEC USC would be fourth, fifth or sixth in the conference. Flag football teams with arm tacklers on defense do not fare well in manly sports such as football. Only Wood and Lee would likely win starting positions on the Alabama team and Barkley, Woods and Lee at LSU. USC will not win a NC in your lifetime.

  28. pulpfictionado says: Aug 2, 2012 7:10 PM

In the PAC-12, LSU/Bama would be third or fourth.

  29. thekatman says: Aug 2, 2012 7:46 PM

The SEC fan boys on this thread might as well go look in the mirror while masticating. You self gratify all you want, just like your blind insistance that the SEC is “all that”! Heck, the conference can’t even provide for a multi-faceted and balanced offense in games that count. Geez, bubbas, get a life.

  30. normtide says: Aug 2, 2012 9:23 PM

Lol, your offenses can’t seem to do much against us in big games. Bama and lsu put up great offensive numbers against every team except each other. Move on to excuse #342 as to why you can’t best us, and prop up your ego by scoring points against those wet paper sack defenses you play. It is like arena league out there.

  31. tigersgeaux says: Aug 2, 2012 11:46 PM

I don’t know any bubbas, but I do know the Swamp People. Need a gator to take a bite out of your rear, bigot? We won’t need a gator, a Tiger or another southern team will do it, when you play us. Such is life!

  32. rsmeans says: Aug 3, 2012 2:59 AM

Against the elite teams of the SEC (Bama, LSU and UF) USC has won only 3 times in 10 tries. That gap is much greater today. USC would be fifth or sixth this year in the SEC. USC is all hype and no meat.

  33. t16rich says: Aug 3, 2012 7:22 AM

    Penn State

  34. tlmoon2112 says: Aug 3, 2012 10:27 AM

    #1 – I dont give a crap who is pre-season #1, its a joke

#2 – the BCS is a joke too

#3 – I cant wait till January to crown a legitimate National Champion, unless Saban opens his wallet to pay off the NCAA and Mike Slive again. What happened to LSU is a tragedy for the entire game and should never happen again. The BCS was put in place to prevent the very thing it caused to happen, a non-conference winner in the Championship Game as a rematch. Between this mistake and the Penn State issue, the entire game of college football has 2 black eyes.

#4 – Im an SEC guy so I can bash my own conference (#3).

#5 – The only USC that matters is the University of South Carolina. Why the hell do you Trojans think Lane Kiffin left UT? He couldnt handle the SEC, nor will he handle it this year. Everytime he sleeps with his wife (a Gator grad) he remembers getting raped by Tebow after telling everyone they would be singing “Rocky Top” in Gainesville all night…..woops.

#6 – The PAC12 HAS improved, but its not the SEC yet. Note the Auburn spanking of Oregon followed by the LSU spanking of Oregon in the last 2 seasons as proof.

  35. thekatman says: Aug 3, 2012 11:59 AM

Wwith all due respect tlmoon2112, under CLK, TN almost beat Alabama and lost by a blocked field goal, and a defensive penalty was not called on the play. CLK left TN for thes best CFG coaching job in the land, which happened to be his dream job, and for no other reason. SEC fans think their conference is the best in the league, but what they are the best at is the defensive front, and having a conf commish who owns the NCAA. That’s it. The SEC is about as crooked of a conference as PSU will be known for its transgressions against innocent boys for a generation. USCe is a good team and should win the SCE East, but when you travel around the country and the world and speak of USC, there’s only one response from those you talk too…. Fight On! not go cocks!

As for Oregon, Auburn beat them by a last secopnd field goal, not a spanking, as you would cvall it… but then you might also say that LSU spanked bama during that aweful 9-6 FG exercise.

  36. brakengo says: Aug 3, 2012 12:47 PM

Coaches poll makes sense to anyone who believes in it. Coaches remain true to their conference.

  37. tigersgeaux says: Aug 3, 2012 3:17 PM

    katman bigot:

LSU spanked the “faster” Oregon team by out running, out blocking, out defensing, out playing, and spanked their fannies well just last season and the score would have been 40 -20 if LSU had not let them save a little dignity by allowing them to score a TD in the last 13 seconds of the game. Tigers had a real good meal, Duck ala Cajun!

LSU will spank the danties at USC if they are able to make it past the patsy schedule they have in the PAC. That would “Trojan on a platter” for LSU or Bama or whatever SEC plays them.

  38. normtide says: Aug 3, 2012 3:25 PM

My fav is chip kelly’s presser after the au and lsu games. Mr confidence was broken. The sec blueprint is simple, the best coaches, players, and facilities. Throw in fans that demand success, and you have bcs dominance.

  39. thekatman says: Aug 3, 2012 8:00 PM

tigersgeaux, give it a rest already. Your hateful filth is annoying to everyone on this thread except your SEC brethren, who are just as clueless.

  40. normtide says: Aug 3, 2012 9:03 PM

I am an sec brethren, but idk where this filth is. I am attempting to have an intelligent debate. Maybe I an winning it and you have to resort to name calling…

  41. jonanthans says: Aug 6, 2012 7:20 PM

One thing I do know about the “great” USC offense with Barkley, Woods & Co. is they cost me $450 last year.

    Barely beat MINNESOTA 19-17….lost $250

Got their a$$es kicked by Arizona State 43-22, lost $200.

The USC faithful needs to stop dreaming about a NC and instead worry about beating Notre Dame and Oregon to start with. I wouldnt be surprised if they got tripped up by Syracuse or Washington either. Yeah, Barkley is a very good Qb, but your defense sucks balls.

  42. kdmd35 says: Aug 6, 2012 10:47 PM

I love how the USC fan is saying the sec is “corrupt” or “crooked” when it comes to the bcs when his school literally bought a national championship via the player bankroll flowing thru USC ala Reggie Bush era, jealousy is a smelly stench …. Keep drinkin haterade and watching the SEC raise the crystal ball

  43. Deb says: Aug 6, 2012 11:18 PM

    @tlmoon2112 …

Yeah, Saban bought the title. He paid LSU to go down 21-0. Could you be a bigger idiot? Sure hope you’re not an LSU fan because that post was more insulting to the Tigers than the Tide.

Wait … don’t answer that question about whether you could be a bigger idiot. I think I know.

I’m a Tide fan and looking forward to another good season. LSU is a great team and highly motivated. USC is the team most likely to upset the SEC’s title run. They’re all good competitors. I’m just looking forward to kickoff.

  44. Deb says: Aug 6, 2012 11:26 PM

    @tlmoon2112 …

On the idiot front, it’s a commissioner’s super-fantasy to have two teams from his own conference in the championship. I realize NCAA football is all about whining to you, but it’s all about money to Slive. And he got a lot more $$$ by having both LSU and Bama in the title game than he could ever have gotten from Nick. No bribes were necessary, dimwit.

And LSU could have avoided that dreadful gasp! injustice. All they had to do was score enough points to win the game.

BCS or playoffs, that will still be the requirement for the title winner: Win the title game. Duh.

  45. fcmlefty1 says: Aug 7, 2012 3:23 PM

I honestly can’t come up with a #1 to start the season. I’d have just called it a tie between Bama and LSU. Both return some serious quality players, and both appear to be head and shoulders above anything the PAC, Big 10, ACC and Big 12 have to offer.

Looking forward to the season. Since my squad (Boise State) is expected to be a bit down this year, it actually makes it easier to enjoy all 124 teams and 11 conferences as a whole.

That said, I still expect my Broncos to go at least 10-2, win the Mt. West, and beat the crap out of some PAC team in the Las Vegas Bowl.
