Reinstated to team, backup South Carolina QB opts to transfer instead

South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier didn’t seem to concerned Sunday over one of his backup quarterbacks, Tanner McEvoy, getting charged with speeding and driving after consuming alcohol.

You want him suspended for having a beer and he’s underage?” Spurrier asked. “How many football players would be playing if they had a beer and they were underage?”

But despite being reinstated to the team, McEvoy has decided -- or, perhaps it was privately decided for him -- to move on to another school. USCe confirmed the transfer in a release Tuesday evening, although where McEvoy is going is unknown.

“The Gamecock coaching staff and I wish Tanner all the best, as he continues his collegiate career elsewhere,” said Spurrier.

The departure leaves Dylan Thompson and Andrew Clifford to compete for the backup quarterback job.
