In the hours after Tyrann Mathieu‘s stunning dismissal from LSU, one of his former teammates tweeted that the All-American cornerback had already moved on to McNeese State.
While such a move has yet to happen, it’s certainly a very real possibility.
In a statement released by the head football coach at the FCS program, it was confirmed that Mathieu visited the Louisiana school the very same day he was given the boot by the Tigers.
“I received a call from Tyrann after practice on Friday that he wanted to come and meet with us,” Cowboys head coach Matt Viator said in the statement. “We contacted LSU to get permission to talk to him and he arrived on campus later that night. We visited for an hour-and-a-half and then he went back home to New Orleans.”
LSU head coach Les Miles acknowledged he is aware of his former player’s interest in McNeese State, “but not in any direct way by nature of the fact that he is no longer on our team.” Miles added that he’ll “follow it very closely, and if needed, maybe offer an opinion.”
No reason other than a violation of team policy has yet to be given for the dismissal, although reports subsequently surfaced that the defensive back nicknamed “Honey Badger” had repeatedly violated the school’s substance abuse policy for athletes.
If Mathieu transfers down to the FCS level or lower, he will apparently be eligible to play immediately in 2012.
