Lane Kiffin gives up his vote in coaches’ poll

Lane Kiffin AP

USC, despite only 75 scholarship players, sits atop our preseason top 25 — meaning the Trojans’ title chances are officially set up for failure – and earned a No. 3 preseason ranking in the first USA Today coaches’ poll.

The whole idea of preseason rankings, let alone one from SIDs coaches everywhere, is absurd. But, it’s also mostly harmless.

That is until USC coach Lane Kiffin caused a bit of voting brouhaha last week when the USA Today ran a story that Kiffin, who previously said he would not give the Trojans his first-place vote, actually did vote his team atop the coaches’ poll. The story gained traction because OMG Lane Kiffin lied, you guys! This confirms my previous belief that he’s a good-for-nothing cheater #GOVAWLS!

It was Kffin’s first-ever ballot as a voter in the poll. It will also apparently be his last. In a letter to the USA Today and the American Football Coaches Association, Kiffin said he would give up his poll vote for good.

“It is an opportunity and responsibility that I do not take lightly,” Kiffin said. “However, I find it necessary to relinquish my voting status.

Something tells me Kiffin’s not losing sleep over this. Just a hunch. Besides, worse things have been said in the city of LA recently.

The only scandal is that the Coaches Poll has/had any role at all in the BCS.

Like him or hate him on this one Kiffen is absolutely right. The coaches poll is a farce, to put it better its bull. No coach worth his salt is going to take his time focusing on what other teams are doing, they are concerned only with their team, and the one they play for the week. They may marginally pay attention to what’s going on in their conference, but to the extent of what’s going on with other teams, a coach just doesn’t have the time. It should be done with, but because of politics and “tradition” its not going anywhere.

But what if Kiffen needs to bump down a deserving team with an artificially-low vote to make sure that his team sneaks in to the championship game?

It’s a preseason poll. Who cares? Lane doesn’t have one second of his time to worry about this nonsense. Let the haters expend all their energy misinterpreting Lane’s comments. Lane is too busy building a dynasty

This can put a coach in a tough spot. Just like players, coaches should think they can beat any team. Whether you coach usc, bama, or ball state, you should always consider yourself the best.

  7. theslick50 says: Aug 13, 2012 1:46 PM

You’re allowed to vote for yourself, that’s not the issue. The issue here is that he lied about it, an all to0 familiar theme with Kiffin. If his mouth is open, there’s a good chance it’s not the truth that he’s spewing.

  8. papabush88 says: Aug 13, 2012 1:58 PM

Several coaches, such as Mack Brown, have lied about preseason polls and rankings before. For all of the level headed CFB fans, this is a non-story. For all the people out there that will find any reason to hate on Lane Kiffin, this is a bigger story than Sandusky and Penn State. Enjoy blowing it out of proportion.

The problems with any pre-season poll is that in all logic, it is nothing more than a ‘prediction’. Pre-season polls are generated on certain factors, mostly taken from ‘last season’s results…’ add in a few stats like ‘who was lost on offense/defense,’ plus who is coming back, and voilla: you have a poll vote. “NOT!” Last year’s results are past history (and that’s where it should stay). The new season has its own merits to consider, but only after 4 or 5 games have been played, so that pollsters have actual ‘facts’ to use in order to make an ‘educated’ vote. Otherwise, again, pollsters are picking at mythical straws or are merely sticking with their own individual (and somewhat biased) favorites and/or alma maters. Perhaps if the name were changed from ‘Pre-Season Poll’ to ‘Pre-Season PREDICTIONS’, there wouldn’t be so much controversy over this.

Anyone catch Lane’s quotes today about If he would rank USC No. 1? Kiffin had this to say:

“We have less players than everybody else,” Kiffin told USA Today. “So looking at it from the outside, I wouldn’t [vote USC No. 1]. Did I? Yeah, I did.”

Love it! The ole bait and switch! Legend!

    ————————————————–

    Legend! What a guy!

Looks like Grant Teaff noticed. Looks like USA Today noticed.

“When a voter volunteers false or misleading information about his vote in public, then USA Today sports will correct the record to protect the poll’s integrity.”

Lane Kiffin is not an honest man. Doesn’t mean he’s not a good football coach. I hope you don’t get your hopes up too high about that dynasty.

Pete only won one and a half titles. Lane will be fortunate to match that. Which isn’t exactly a dynasty.

Let me guess, all of this is Reggie Bush’s fault too.

  11. normtide says: Aug 13, 2012 2:11 PM

I have to agree with pappa on this, except for the dynasty part, ofc. A coach’s job is to do what is best for his team, if that involves lieing to me, so what? I ain’t on his team. What does kiffen owe me? I dont care for him, but this is nothing. He should not give his vote up tho, what does he gain from that?

  12. ukeone says: Aug 13, 2012 2:17 PM

Coaches are going to be biased toward their own team(s) when push come to shove in the polling process. That’s why I agree that the coaches’ poll is kind of a farce. But the press pollsters are not that far behind. Like it or not, they too have their own individual ‘favorites’ (based on alma maters and headline makers, etc.). However, where does one go from there if everyone wants ‘truly unbiased voting’; votes that are based on ‘factual outcomes’ and not ‘undying loyalty’ to a particular school or coach? Everyone has griped about the computer rankings in the BCS, so, it’s just going to be far too difficult to find that unbiased source that will vote for ‘the real champion’ in college football…if somewhere out there has a ‘clear solution.’ let’s hear it.

Does anybody really believe that any major D1 coach would not lie to the media? Child, Please!

  14. rprante says: Aug 13, 2012 5:50 PM

Yeah, I can’t stand the man – he’s a big-time douche canoe… But this isn’t much of a story. Lane Kiffin lied??? Really? We’re his lips moving? And about a pre-season ranking vote that doesn’t mean squat anyway…not news worthy.

But I’ll take any opportunity to bash…

  15. foreverlsu says: Aug 13, 2012 5:52 PM

Dynasty!?? What a joke. Pete couldn’t even win one BCS title but Kiffin is going to build a dynasty? Laughable!

  16. seanmmartin says: Aug 13, 2012 5:57 PM

The USA Today Coaches Poll is over rated. Less than half the coaches vote, and how many of the ones that do are following the other 122 teams in the FBS? Few, if any.

I thought Steve Spurrier was the only turdburglar in college football that wore a visor. I was wrong.

  20. papabush88 says: Aug 13, 2012 8:13 PM

Not sure why people disagree with my comment about Lane being too busy building a dynasty. Never said he has a dynasty. Just said he is building one. I would assume every coach is trying to build a dynasty at their school. Are you all suggesting Lane is not trying to win multiple championships?

  21. acieu says: Aug 13, 2012 9:29 PM

Now if he goes full monte and relinquishes lying!

  22. houndofthebaskervols says: Aug 13, 2012 11:33 PM

Kiffin you are such a douchebag. I have defended you for 2 years, no more. You’re a lying piece of crap.

  23. mick5430 says: Aug 14, 2012 8:51 AM

Ever since Kiffin lied to Tennessee and bolted for USC after one season, I learned to expect nothing from this coach in terms of honesty and integrity. Lane Kiffin doesn’t have any. This is just another example of that.

  24. omniusprime says: Aug 14, 2012 8:55 AM

This is truly a stupid story. Even more stupid is Lane Kiffin having to give up his coach’s poll vote. So what if he voted for USC to be #1 even if he said he didn’t? Another case of much ado about nothing. Looks like a bunch of crybaby Vol fans here whining about Lane’s exit.

  25. myopinionisrighterthanyours says: Aug 14, 2012 10:41 AM

As much as I can’t stand Lame, he’s completely in the right here, although he probably shouldn’t have said what he initially said. Anyone who’s getting on Kiffin’s case on this, is just doing so out of blind hatred for him or USC.

  26. papabush88 says: Aug 14, 2012 4:16 PM

    @mick5430

It’s people like you that make Lane’s job so easy. You have drastically lowered your expectations of Kiffin, and have made it so easy for him to step right over it. Thank you. A team in the middle of some of the most egregious sanctions in the nation, who was picked to lose 5 games (ASU, Cal, ND, Oregon, Stanford), ended up going 10-2 in spectacular fashion.

Now, we have title hopes. Keep hating on Kiffin. It is helping him and USC to succeed.

  27. derrickbrooks4president says: Aug 15, 2012 6:37 PM

Remind me, what has Lame won so far in illustrious career? Oh yeah, Nothing. Monte needs to go home and slap his wife because there is no way that’s his biological boy.
