APFollowing up on reports from the Seattle Times and Northwest Arkansas Online from the past week or so, former Washington defensive coordinator Nick Holt is indeed heading to Arkansas.
… And he’ll be taking Jessica Dorrell’s old job, now known as “on-campus recruiting organizer.”
[/Dramatically fights urge to spew inappropriate jokes]
“Nick Holt is a tremendous addition to our program,” coach John L. Smith said Wednesday. “He will be able to come in here and fit well within our staff, and he brings a tremendous amount of football knowledge. He is great interacting with student-athletes and truly wants to put them in a position to succeed. I have no doubt Nick will be successful in this role for us.”
Dorrell was Bobby Petrino‘s mistress hired quid pro quo last spring and was on a motorcycle operated by Petrino when the two were involved in a single-vehicle accident last April. Petrino failed to mention Dorrell’s presence and was eventually fired by athletic director Jeff Long. Dorrell “resigned” a short time later.
Holt was canned by Washington coach Steve Sarkisian after the Huskies’ defense failed to make the plane trip down to San Antonio for a 67-56 loss to Baylor in the Alamo Bowl. If anything, Holt heading to Arkansas in this capacity says more about the direction his career is heading than anything else.
ahhh….and there, more than anything else is the problem with our economy. A guy screws up and gets beat or has a pretty bad day/week/month……..he/she loses said job and instead of waiting around for a dream job to just come along they put their head down and go right back to work at a lower position determined to work their way back up the ladder…….and for this we pretty much call them a loser?????
guess he should have stayed on the unemployment line until another d-coord or position coach job fell in his lap?
no hate meant to Ben on this……..just is a serious problem we have where once we screw up and take a step back we are told by society to just go home.
Good luck to Mr. Holt. Looking forward to the next chapter.
Where is Mark Emmert at? Lack of institutional control! 2 year bowl ban!
Nick just ran out of 5 star recruits that he had during his DC days at USC ! That fact made the job quite easy and must have received over rated credit which was witnessed by his out of the ordinary paycheck bump when he followed Sarkisian to Washington in the first place. Don’t know if it was all Nick’s fault but apparently someone had to be the scapegoat.
For some reason, this picture doesn’t look right. I mean great he got himself a job, but if we look into it a little more, I got to believe their is more to come here with Nick and the football program.
Nick Holt is a pretty good coach, and comes from some pretty solid programs. I’m sure has networked over the years and has plenty of friends in both College and the Pros who would offer him at least a position coach for a year. Namely Pete Carroll. I don’t think he has burned bridges either.
I got to believe he was talked into to this job for a year and come December, maybe there’s something more in it for him. There’s no way I believe he is done coaching or would settle for this type of pay cut this early in his coaching career. Just my thoughts.
He has big shoes to fill after following the legendary Jessica Dorrell. Doubt Nick would be riding any Razorback coach’s motorcycle with those looks.

Goobs,
You are a total loser.
Taking any job at Arkansas is gamble. Smith looks to be a stop-gap – the team has high expectations and didn’t want to just “burn” the season by making an assistant an interim.
Figure Holt might also provide some defensive help, if the Hogs have a good season, he gets elevated and goes somewhere else.
If they fall short – the coaching staff is dismissed anyway by the next guy to come in.
He still gets paid by UW and has his hand in the game.
I’ve always wondered about Holt though – is he more of a coach or a recruiter? Judging by his stints at Idaho and UW it is hard to figure out which. USC pretty much recruits itself.

Best post I’ve ever read here. Well done.
Mr. Holt also got himself a $650K check when he was fired by UW.
This guy doesn’t need the money.
He worked with the Arkansas coach in the past and probably wanted to get back in the game at some capacity. Good for him.
Go Huskies!
I hope he knows John L Smith likes to get slapped…
How ignorant for media to continue to post that Petrino got into a motorcycle accident and that his back seat passenger, Jessica, riding without a helmet, never even had a scratch. Fact is that Jessica left a cell phone where her “beau” found it and saw that she was hooking up again with Petrino. Bottom line is that the beau followed Petrino and beat the crap out of him. Tiger Woods got the same treatment from his ex when she, too, found a cell phone detailing his misdeeds. Only difference is that this guy was a strength coach for minor sports and did not need the 9 iron to work over Petrino.
I want what leftcoastnative is having.
Why didn’t he take the DC job from the St. Louis Rams? I hear they don’t mind if the defense never shows up.
I’m really disappointed in the lack of awesome jokes the title alone deserved!
I liked Holt at Washington. Felt the lack of success was more his lack of talent than coaching. He had decent secondary and good line, but where it counts in college he was thin…. linebacker.
