When Notre Dame takes the field for its game against Miami at historic Soldier Field the second month of the season, they’ll do so in some decidedly different duds.
The school and uniform maker adidas unveiled Thursday the new TECHFIT football uniforms that the Irish will for the Oct. 6 vs. the Hurricanes in Chicago for this year’s Shamrock Series. The release describes the new uniforms thusly:
Notre Dame’s new adidas TECHFIT football uniform is a modern take on the classic blue jersey and features gold metallic numbers and IRISH in a Celtic font. The bright gold helmet is split with a blue section highlighting a large white Leprechaun graphic. Notre Dame’s gold pants feature a blue stripe on the left leg and the updated Leprechaun graphic. The team’s adidas TECHFIT base layer features gold numbers on the sleeves and the Leprechaun graphic on chest. The updated interpretation of the classic Notre Dame Leprechaun logo also appears on the team’s adizero Smoke gloves.
…
Notre Dame’s adidas TECHFIT jersey features multiple innovations to reduce the weight of the jersey by 30 percent, including a streamlined fit, new fabric, reduced seams and an ultra lightweight numbering system. In addition, the adidas TECHFIT jersey keeps players cool with integrated ventilation zones and moisture management fabric. Reduced seams and a restriction-free, high-stretch collar design increases range of motion to support player agility and speed.
Head coach Brian Kelly said his players gave the new uniforms a universal thumbs up.
“The Shamrock Series is a great opportunity for our football program to play in an exciting venue located in an area with so many Notre Dame fans,” Kelly’s statement read. “This year’s game at Soldier Field will be part of an incredible weekend for the University in Chicago and will be a great experience for our team. The players absolutely love the uniforms designed by adidas for this game and they will help make it a memorable night.”

Those helmets are flat out disgusting. What an embarrassment for the Gipper rolling over in his grave.
Last year Miami got Maryland’s insane Maryland Flag uniforms and now this year they get Notre Dame’s half and half helmet.
Can’t I get a nationally televised out of conference game with normal uniforms?
Great teams don’t need gimmicks like changing their uniforms. Also, these uniforms look like a joke.
the uniforms are ok, but there are only two words to describe the helmets; ug and ly
Joke of a uniform for a joke of a program. Pretty fitting.
By Oct. 6 both teams should be irrelevant. Again.
So I was sitting on the shitter reading this thread and almost wiped my but with my phone when I saw those pics. Then again the regular uniforms are just as bad.
I have been a ND fan since I was 8 years old. I have know a number of players from the Leahy years, including Ziggy, and John Lattner; and I can assure you that they would agree with me that these uniforms are not ‘IRISH’, but modern ghetto trash.
The helmets are disgusting.
This uniform does not represent ND, in any way, with the traditional styles of the past. If this is an example of the future, get a new designer and head coach. The approval by the players proves that they have NO knowledge of, and couldn’t care less of the past……and neither does the coach.
This will help start the season with a loss…and how many more this year ? Recent years have been bad……these ugly uniforms will add to that !!
did everyone notice that the pant stripe is only on one side?
The helmet would look better if the blue was on both sides leaving a gold center stripe.
Terrible choice. Stick with tradition.
You HAVE to have an all gold helmet, that’s just a crime not to. I can live with the rest of the uniform, but the helmet has to go. Please, please don’t crush every last tradition in football because Nike and adidas think it’s cool.
They make tons of money off changing things every year and the fans are stuck with bastardizations of their favored traditions.
ND fans are no longer allowed to use the word tradition on this site, unless they storm the field and destroy, what the Devil obviously created.
Adidas just needs to quit., ALL of their techfit uniforms this year are hideous.
So is Adidas’s goal to out ugly under-armor? They might win, but Maryland is still the reigning champ!
I am, and will always be, a life long Fighting Irish fan. The uniforms are not too bad. But the helmets are simply awful. They are as bad as the Maryland helmets of last year. Great historic teams don’t change their uniforms or they make minimal changes…New York Yankees, Montreal Canadiens, Boston Celtics, Green Bay Packers, The University of Alabama. Notre Dame used to be on that list. I can’t believe the AD or the head coach didn’t have veto power over Adidas and say “no” to those terrible helmets.
As a long time USC fan, I think the uniforms look great! Especially when they get stomped on by the Trojans!
Hell hath frozen over. Hideous!
I would have thought authentic Irish Uniforms would have incorperated some kind of wood paneling , potato skin helmets , and/or wiskey bottle mouth guards
Touchdown Jesus just may start pulling for Baylor, Wake Forest, TCU, SMU, or maybe even Presbyterian after getting a look at Notre Dame’s new duds.
That uni is hideous. Does the Arena League now have a team based out of South Bend? What happened to the idea that if you have an iconic uni, one everybody recognizes, one that’s a classic design, you keep it? They’ve been messing with the Irish unis for the last couple of years…I can remember what an uproar it caused when Dan Devine brought the team out in green jerseys some decades ago. Now, it looks like their uniforms were designed by Paris Hilton.
I don’t have a dog in this hunt, since I’ve never been a fan of the Irish, but geez…somebody needs to call the fashion police on ‘em when they step out on the field in that uniform. Those unis are bad enough to make Maryland’s look, dare I say it, traditional.
Not even close to being a ND fan, but I feel for ND fans…. That uniform first off looks like Michigan at a glance and the helmet is just awful… Just awful
HORRIBLE!!!
The Uniforms aren’t as bad as the other trash adidas created for the Nebraska vs. Wisconsin game, but messing with the gold helmet was the wring answer.
1. The real helmets are too sexy to change
2. How will they do a helmet painting?
3. Do I even need a third reason?!?!?!
Scrap the plans for at least the helmet now, or I will not buy another piece of ND clothing made by adidas!
@ friarjack61who says:

We understand your feelings about the uniforms, but why do you call them “ghetto?”
We’re pretty sure no one from the “ghetto” had anything to do with the decision.
Coolhorn, Dan Devine brought out the green uniforms after a over 13 years of not using them. On October 22, 1977 in a game against USC, Notre Dame warmed up in the standard blue jerseys and then left the field. They came back out to start the game wearing the Kelly green jerseys. It inspired the Irish led by Joe Montana to handily beat USC 49-19. It became reknowed as the “Trojan Horse” game.
I would rather watch Rosie O’Donnell mudwrestle Joy Behar than look at these unis.
ugly uniforms for a terrible team. sounds right. looking forward to USCs annual ass whooping of ND
Adidas designers need to give up. Your not Nike. All of their special uniform designs are garbage.
1. Nike (Oregon, Virginia Tech) – Reliably fresh.
2. Under Armour (Maryland, Utah) – Sometimes creative.
3. Adidas (Nebraska, Notre Dame) – FAIL!
ND wants Miami to think they are playing Michigan.
Was the helmet designer on crack at the time?
First of all its JUST a uniform! If they beat the sh@t out of Miami while wearing these uniforms, ALL of you will jump on the band-wagon!
I’m more interested in how the ACTUAL players perform while wearing whatever the hell the coaches put them in!
GET over it people!
The CFL stars of tomorrow are only on NBC!
BTW Miami? Was Tulsa unavailable or is that no longer considered a “W”?
Can u say UGLY AS HE@@….WTF
Dear God ND fans. It’s for one friggin game!!! “They’re messing with tradition!!” STFU!!! It ‘s only ONE game. One. UNO!!! Chill out.
As a non Notre Dame fan, they are brutal. That being said, I think they should stick with the helmet all the time if it was all gold. This version’s gold looks a lot more like the golden dome than their traditional gold helmets.
I’m fine with messing with uniforms one game a year, but the helmet needs to be changed to something that looks at the very least half respectable. All I ask is a revisit of the helmet design.
The best comment by far belongs to “305fan”!
They should opt for a uni that is wallpapered with passes to the Champagne room. It’ll confuse the hell out of these hapless canes.
Might as well join the Big East. Your uniform looks like PITT and your helmet is as ugly as Marylands.
Even when Michigan played in those bumble bee uniforms last year, they didnt mess with the helmet.
Whats next Touchdown Buda?
Actually they did change the helmet, just not nearly as much. Maybe we could use something similar to our helmets from that game. Say, all blue with that Leprechaun on both sides?
What’s the point in these uniforms? Helmet sales?
I’d rather they played in skinny jeans and hipster glasses
When your a storied program, you don’t sell out & get caught up in this stupid alternate uniform phase. Your the University of Notre Dame, not Oregon. It’s disgraceful & as a life-long Domer, it’s sickening.
Given ND’s irrelevance on the field over the last 25 years or so, these uniforms are probably the only thing that is newsworthy!
1 game who cares
They need to have the regular unis in the locker room ready to go at half time when Miami is slapping the crap out of them for disrespecting them by wearing this on the same field as the ‘Canes! Coming out at half time in green is the only way Kelly and the domers could redeem themselves for wearing this crap!
I agree with the guy who said the unis look like Michigan’s. ND is supposed to be blue and gold, not blue and yellow/maize.
Also, include me in the group that thinks the split-design helmets are awful.
I’m neither an ND hater or fan, but given ND’s schedule this year, I’d give them a best-case 8-4 record, and a worst-case 6-6 record. By the end of the year, the ugly uniforms will be the least of their worries.
Besides the helmet, the uniforms aren’t bad. Still hate ND! Go Blue!!
Why!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’m a USC fan & one thing I know is the ND home @ away uni’s are perfect. These last 2 years with the uniform changes are just pathetic.
Fugly
Worst helmet design battle 2012. ND vs. U of M.
Embarassingly ugly…..hideous
I must admit to being one of the many who were totally ready to burn the green jerseys. Seems like they held the green-jersey curse.
But these uniforms are just nasty.
Several people have mentioned a likeness to the Michigan uniforms. I’m not seeing that as much as a likeness to the uniforms of Army.
The blue seems so dark it is bordering on black.
I do like the updated Leprechaun but the helmets should stay gold… always gold… nothing else. Golden Dome = golden helmets.
Put the new leprechaun on the thousands of different t-shirts available for us ND fans.
The only thing that could make these unifoms worse is if they put the players names on the back of the jerseys.
*ugh**
