Earlier this offseason, Tulane’s Trent Mackey was named the preseason Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year.
With the start of the 2012 season exactly two weeks away for the Green Wave, they could very well be without the star linebacker for an extended period of time.
According to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, Mackey was arrested Friday and charged with armed robbery. The arrest and charge stemming from the July 12 incident are part of a convoluted story in which Mackey, along with a female friend, was originally listed as the victim of a robbery in a police report.
From the paper:...In the previous NOPD report, Mackey was listed as victim of a robbery with his cell phone and backpack having been stolen from the residence of a female friend July 12 on Broadway in Uptown.
Upon further investigation, Mackey was thought to have orchestrated the incident, according to the arrest report. Mackey, a 22-year-old Port Sulphur native, was arrested along with 19-year-old Robert Murray, who invaded a residence on the afternoon of July 12.
After Murray’s arrest today, he agreed to a taped statement and implicated Mackey as orchestrating the incident. “Mackey did not cooperate with the detectives and elected to claim his 5th Amendments Rights,” according to the report issued today.
As a result of the arrest, Mackey has been indefinitely suspended by Tulane.
“Trent Mackey, a senior from Port Sulphur, Louisiana, has been indefinitely suspended from the Tulane University football team,” a statement from the school read. “The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) prohibits the university from providing any additional information regarding disciplinary actions, if any, toward a student.”
Mackey was a first-team all-conference selection last season and finished second in the league in tackle per game (12.1).
