Updated: Notre Dame loses projected starting CB to Achilles injury

Notre Dame’s quest to get back to the BCS has reportedly taken a serious blow weeks before the start of the season.

Irish Illustrated first reported that projected starting cornerback Lo Wood suffered a season-ending Achilles injury on Monday. Coach Brian Kelly confirmed the injury Tuesday. Wood will undergo surgery on Wednesday and miss the 2012 season.

It’s a tough blow to an Irish cornerback unit that doesn’t have a ton of experience (more on what that means for Notre Dame HERE).

Wood appeared in 10 games last year, but only recorded six total tackles. However, he did get plenty of snaps during preseason practice.

There’s simply no way to overemphasize how tough of a loss this is for Notre Dame’s defense.

Who needs probation, when key players are dropping like flies due to injury?

I had a partial Achilles tear and took 6 months to rehab before I could walk properly again. I know things have changed, but they used to not operate unless it was a complete tear. If his is a complete tear, he’s done. It takes a MINIMUM of a year to recover, doesn’t matter how “athletic” you are. Best advise I got was to start riding a bike as soon as I could. Low-impact, gets blood flowing to the affected area which helps the healing process. (The part I wasn’t told is that I’d also lose 30 pounds in about 3 months :) ) What’s weird about an Achilles: if it’s a partial tear like mine, the pain is incredible; if it’s a complete tear, there is no pain. Pretty bizarre. Not an ND fan, but I hope he recovers and can play again. Hate seeing these kids getting hurt like this. All they’re trying to do is live out a dream of playing sports at a high level.
