First of October earliest return date for UF’s Powell

When Ronald Powell tore the ACL in his right knee during Florida’s spring game April 7, the timeline for a return was set at 4-6 months.

As it turns out, the latter end of the prognosis may have been right on the mark. Maybe.

Addressing the linebacker’s status for the upcoming season, head coach Will Muschamp at first said “not really” when asked if there was any type of timetable on a return before quickly adding "[t]he first of October.”

Muschamp said while Powell is progressing in his recovery, it’s going to be up to UF’s medical staff when the talented junior will hit the playing field for the first time in 2012.

“Ronald Powell continues to progress very well,” Muschamp said. “I don’t know how loose that timeframe goes. It’s totally up to the doctors and what he feels good about.”

Powell, the top-rated player in the country in the Class of 2010, played in 12 games last season, recording 32 tackles, six sacks and a forced fumble.
