APWith Tommy Rees staying in the United States while Notre Dame heads to Ireland for the season-opening game against Navy, the Irish quarterback job was up for grabs.
Primarily, it’s been a two-way battle between sophomore Everett Golson and junior Andrew Hendrix with Golston being the presumed favorite. On Thursday, coach Brian Kelly (pictured) finally made the announcement that’s been expected since Rees’ suspension.
Indeed, Golson will be the starter against the Midshipmen. Earlier Thursday, the Chicago Tribune reported that Golson would be the first-string quarterback.
“It was a tough decision, but Everett clearly won the starting job,” Kelly said.
Clearly. Kelly’s been raving about Golson all offseason despite the fact that the South Carolina native is by far the smallest in size compared to the other signal callers in the group. Golson also did not see any action last season.
If Golson plays well against Navy, he’ll probably have a good chance of securing the starting job going forward. At the very least, it’ll be Rees who has to prove he deserves the job to Kelly again.
It doesn’t matter who the golden domer’s
put under center. # 16 will still run for over 200 yards in another Michigan victory.
Go Blue!
Ben, the Tribune reported it after your colleague Keith Arnold tweeted it. Give Keith his due!
I am an Ohio native born and raised on ND (mother’s side) and Mich ( father’s side) football. So, the mich game can be tough for me. But I am eager to see EG in action and will cheer for him throughout the season. At least I hope he doesn’t get pulled after the first mistake.
Here comes another Tony Rice.
Kelly is not the right man for this job.
I have to admit, kind of excited to see the game played in ireland. I always pull for service academies when I can, but dont see navy pulling the upset. Kudos to both teams for creating a bowl atmosphere for their players and fans.
No wonder Tommy Rees got hammered
Nice
As a Notre Dame fan, it makes me sick to my stomach to read that Golson will “have a chance to secure the starting job going forward”.
Am I correct in interpreting the author as saying then that Tommy Rees is still being considered the starter? That Golson has to take if from him? I think not–I think the implication here is that there are no plans to start Rees this year. Golson has been taking the first team snaps along with Hendrix and, though practices are closed, I believe that Golson has been getting the lion’s share of those snaps. I understand that whomever was going to start the Navy game would get the majority of snaps in the preseason as a whole but all indications–check out Irish Sports Daily–are that Rees has been getting little to no snaps in fall practice. Rees has been in a coaching mode.
Again, the implication that this is only for the Navy game is incorrect because Rees is at too big a disadvantage at this point as he has been taking very few snaps the first three weeks of practice. No way is ND going to get back from Ireland, take Monday off and then just go back to Rees under center for week 2. Not going to happen. Rees is done unless Golson and Hendrix get injured–not are ineffective but injured.
As for elwaymilehigh guy: you’re an asshole. I’m certain that you are correct….but you’re still an asshole.
If Golson had “clearly” won the starting job, why was the decision so difficult?
My Reds have kept my attention all summer, and hopefully well into October. Seems expectations aren’t too high from the Irish faithful. I think Golson can be a game-changer. Looking forward to seeing a dangerous QB under center at ND for the first time since I was in junior high.
Perhaps the decision was so difficult because both QBs are so good it is almost impossible to separate them.
The decision was between Golson and Hendrix….not Tommy….
The way Kelly screams at his QB’s during nationally televised games, it’s a wonder why anyone would want to play for him.
^ Trojan quit trolling….asinine comments aren’t welcome…
I live where Golson is from. This kid was an absolute BEAST in high school. Wish he had been a Gamecock…
