Rocco, not Sims, named Virginia’s starting QB

Virginia will face off against Richmond -- Mike London‘s old team -- this Saturday. When the Cavaliers do take the field, they know who the starting quarterback will be.

And it won’t be Alabama transfer Phillip Sims.

UVA’s updated depth chart was released on Monday and incumbent starter Michael Rocco is listed as the starter with Sims as the backup and David Watford as third-string.

Rocco (pictured, No. 16) tossed for over 2,600 last year as a sophomore and entered fall camp with a self-assurance that he would continue to be the starter for Virginia. Sims, on the other hand, received word in July from the NCAA that the waiver allowing him to play right away had been granted.

Sims lost out on the starting job at Alabama last season to A.J. McCarron and made his intentions to transfer known in the spring, citing “personal reasons.”

Sims, a Virginia native and former four-star recruit (Rivals.com) who signed with the Tide in 2010, still has three more years of eligibility remaining and may start at some point down the road. For now, that job is Rocco’s to lose.
