Lose out on the starting job; become the subject of transfer rumors.
That’s the case with Oregon quarterback Bryan Bennett, who will sit behind redshirt freshman Marcus Mariota this season. A number of reports making their way through the rumor mill indicate Bennett is considering a transfer.
Asked by reporters on Tuesday if he was leaving, Bennett said “I don’t know.” The Oregonian and the Eugene Register Guard report that Bennett is intending to transfer, but that’s far from confirmed. There are also mixed reports on whether Bennett was at practice.
Bennett, a redshirt sophomore, was figured to be the next in line after Darron Thomas departed unexpectedly for the NFL draft. He played well in spot duty last year for Thomas, throwing 369 yards and six touchdowns.
But the gap between Mariota and Bennett was close during the Ducks’ spring game. In fact, one could make the argument that Mariota had the better scrimmage.
In any case, if Bennett does leave, Oregon has two other scholarship QBs on roster in freshmen Jeff Lockie and Jake Rodrigues.
I hope he sticks around at least for the year to see how it plays out. You never know what can happen, especially with a red shirt freshman at QB.
Something tells me he’ll have plenty of chances to win his spot back.
Is it too early for him to go to Wisconsin yet?
Auburn is looking for a real QB
Given Oregon’s offense, which is like a jakked up option which prizes smaller quicker players… well, that tends to chew up QBs. This kid should wait it out– chances are he’ll get some playing time when QB1 (and QB2 and QB3) get dinged up and need to rest for a series or 2.
Auburn wants to sign him as a free agent for $150,000.
Welcome to the U!
He would be taking a pay cut to go to Auburn.
@ burm61:
I heard that Bielema has already sent him a plane ticket.
