Getty ImagesSouth Carolina running back Marcus Lattimore was playing in his first game since suffering a season-ending knee injury last season against Mississippi State.
So far, Lattimore’s knee looks fine. He has 12 carries for 66 yards, 29 of which came on a nifty touchdown run where he made a nice cut to avoid a tackle.
It’s quarterback Connor Shaw that Steve Spurrier needs to worry about now. In the final minutes of the first half, Shaw got up limping from a tackle and immediately went to the sideline. Not long after, Shaw and team trainers headed to the locker early. ESPN sideline reporter Samantha Steele said Shaw was favoring his right (throwing) shoulder and appeared to be in a lot of pain.
The early report from the press box is that Shaw has a shoulder contusion (bruise), and sophomore Dylan Thompson is starting the second half.
No. 9 South Carolina got off to an early 10-0 lead after a sloppy, turnover-filled first quarter, but Vanderbilt fired back with a 78-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Rodgers to Jordan Matthews. Since then, the momentum has swung in the Commodores’ favor.
Updated 9:21 p.m. ET: Either Connor Shaw’s shoulder bruise isn’t all that bad, or he’s a trooper. Shaw returned to the field about midway through the third quarter after a late arrival from the locker room. Shaw made an attempt to throw some passes during halftime without pads, but apparently wasn’t well enough to go at the time.
South Carolina trails Vanderbilt 13-10, and Spurrier’s gotten away from giving Lattimore the ball. It’ll be interesting to see how Shaw is used going forward from here on out tonight.
