Spurrier: Connor Shaw having ‘trouble lifting his arm right now’

A shoulder contusion kept South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw out for only part of Thursday’s win against Vanderbilt, but it certainly hampered his effectiveness.

Shaw threw for only 67 yards against the Commodores -- it should be pointed out he wasn’t having a great game throwing the ball before he was injured, either -- but there was no questioning his toughness. Shaw ran the ball with reckless abandon, though he might be paying for it later.

“It’s just painful for him,” Steve Spurrier said Sunday. “And he has trouble lifting his arm right now so it’s pretty hard to play quarterback.”

Shaw took a lot of shots during the second half of Thursday’s game. He was in visible pain for much of the night.

Spurrier added that playing Shaw against East Carolina was a “wait and see” situation. For now, Shaw will miss at least a couple of practices. If he can’t go against the Pirates, backup Dylan Thompson could get the start.
