Alabama the consensus No. 1 thanks to coaches’ poll

Alabama Michigan AP

The latest AP poll nudged Alabama up from its previously held No. 2 ranking to the No. 1 spot this week. The USA Today coaches’ poll followed in kind a short time later, as Bama previously trailed LSU in the preseason poll.

As a result, Alabama is the country’s consensus No. 1 team in the eyes of voters. The Tide secured 37 first-place votes on its way to the top, while the Tigers of LSU fell two spots to No. 3 after beating North Texas 41-14. USC rose to second place after defeating Hawaii, and just like in the AP poll, Oregon moved up ahead of Oklahoma to grab the No. 4 spot.

Florida State, Georgia, West Virginia, South Carolina and Arkansas rounded out the top 10. Michigan State and Clemson moved up in the coaches’ poll as well to spots No. 11 and No. 12, while Wisconsin fell one spot to No. 13. Nebraska moved up two spots to No. 14 and Texas stayed at No. 15. Oklahoma State, TCU, Virginia Tech, Michigan and Kansas State complete the top 20. The Wolverines fell 11 spots as well following the 41-14 loss to Alabama.

Rounding out the top 25 are Stanford, Notre Dame, Florida, Louisville and Boise State. Unlike the AP top 25, no teams fell out of the coaches’ top 25 poll.

    Alabama
    LSU
    USC

    Should be top three order

    Michigan is now ranked MUCH more accurately.

    Go BLUE!

    Looks good but imo Oregon should be #3 then USC.

  3. jsto9 says: Sep 4, 2012 1:53 PM

    Because Arkansas State is so much tougher than Hawaii…?

    Make no mistake about it: Alabama deserves #1 ranking. They beat a top 10 team. However, we should all know that at the end of the day, the B1G is slow and overrated. When your one player that can match the speed of the SEC is Mr. Inconsistent Denard Robinson, you got a problem. Alabama, USC, and LSU all looked dominant, but Alabama is the winner as they played a highly ranked team. Michigan should’ve been #19 all along. I’m just never too impressed by the B1G. Too many Rose Bowls in the last 10 years that they got destroyed. But just like in 2008 when #2 USC beat #3 Ohio State by a score of 35-3, USC deserved that #1 ranking after just like Bama deserves theirs this time around. Probably even takes some pressure off USC.

    Not sure if Oregon is better this year compared to last year, but DeAnthony Thomas sure is. He and Marqise Lee are the most electrifying players out West, except Thomas gets more opportunities to get the ball. DAT is my Heisman favorite but he’s so small that almost any hit could take him out…that is if anyone can catch him

    @polegojim

    Careful about disrespecting USC. We may end up playing you in the Rose Bowl…we all know how that turns out. See 2004 and 2007 Rose Bowls (as well as all recent Rose Bowls of USC vs B1G)

    Note: Michigan was favored to beat USC in 2007 Rose Bowl. USC won by 14, and only because Michigan scored a TD in garbage time with 1 minute left in 4th quarter.

    Top 3 look good
    BLUE is right where they should, but imo will drop from top 25 soon when they lose to MI STATE or ND
    Think OK should be closer to 15 or 16
    Irish look good there as well. Hope they move up the chart as the year goes on.

    Go Irish!!!

    Fitting seeing how that even if they lose, the voters will anoint them to the BCS Championship Game anyway. Lets just forget playing the rest of the season and give them the trophy now?

  8. guinsrule says: Sep 4, 2012 2:44 PM

    How about we poll the coaches and see how many actually watched a college football game other than their own…

  9. roundup5 says: Sep 4, 2012 3:23 PM

    There should be no polls until the 5th week of the season.

  10. suprmous says: Sep 4, 2012 3:48 PM

    We, those of us at and who support LSU, want you to enjoy bein #1 for the first part of the season believe it or not because it takes the pressure of us BUT come the 2nd part look out cause here we come.

  11. polegojim says: Sep 4, 2012 3:54 PM

    @papabush – knock the chip off your own shoulder…

    It’s not disrespecting USC to state the truth.
    When USC earns the #1, #2, or #3 spot, they should have it and I’ll be the first to vote for them. So far…. nada, zip, squat, nothing.

    As far as Rose Bowls – every year is on it’s own. If we see you there we’ll see what happens. I don’t believe we’ll be there – not ready yet.

    And… if we’re counting the past – 895-779 = your 116 games short of any overall bragging. Have fun catching up!!!

    Both Michigan and USC have 11 Nat Titles.

  12. edcolton says: Sep 4, 2012 4:04 PM

    Michigan might be small but their slow!!!

    SEC just too big, fast, athletic AND THEY PLAY DEFENSE

    Pac 12 arm tackles-won’t cut it in SEC

  13. trojan33sc says: Sep 4, 2012 4:28 PM

    The Top 4 Ranking doesn’t matter, it will all play itself out in the conference championship games. If my Trojans can man-handle Oregon then they can take on the SEC Champion and get it on. It will be an EPIC battle.

  14. takingbovadasmoney says: Sep 4, 2012 4:46 PM

    While Alabama looks very good, there should be no polls until week 4 or 5.

  15. brakengo says: Sep 4, 2012 5:13 PM

    Someone stated the obvious … USC drops one slot vs unranked. Bama moves up vs ranked. LSU and Oregon remain the same.

    Someone else stated at the end ESPN will lobby for an SEC team to play for championship game.

    And another stated a 2 lose SEC team will be in if they win conference game.

  16. foreverlsu says: Sep 4, 2012 10:15 PM

    It could happen brakengo but there is precedence since a two loss SEC team already clubbed the next best non- SEC team in 2007. Sure, it could happen again but don’t be bitter when it does.

  17. brakengo says: Sep 5, 2012 12:09 AM

    @ foreverlsu:

    Back dooring won’t happen again nor would a twice lose team be in the tutle game due to strength of scheduling, so the Tigers desire to not travel vs non-conference and play lower tier schools should hurt them.

    Click.

    I see “10” down my comment, does this mean 10 don’t have faith or confidence in what I said or is that 10 don’t have on their Big Boy/Girl Panties on? Whatever the case may be, learn to deal with it cause after 3 or 4 wks you’ll see us makin our move toward the top. GEAUX TIGERS

  19. harbourimages says: Sep 5, 2012 9:52 AM

    Certainly no doubt our Wolverines got our butts whipped by Bama, and with five of the top nine teams in the polls from the SEC there isn’t much doubt which conference still is the superior FOOTBALL conference. I still love the choice of Brady Hoke as our coach, though, and didn’t expect this year to be as stellar as last. Of course Bama could wipe out MOST teams right now, and they only seem to get better, whether due to Saban or just because they’re Alabama or both. Doesn’t matter. They rule right now, and it will be interesting to see how Michigan plays against college teams that are merely “really good,” e.g., ND, MSU, OSU, instead of the best team in the country. The way Bama looked on Saturday they could have given some NFL teams a tough time! I’ll be happy with 8 or 9 wins for BLUE this year, and expect many more than that from the next several Hoke teams…. GO BLUE!

    @suprmous

    After that beat-down in the NC if i were a LSU fan i wouldnt say “here we come” due to the fact your Tigers can`t get the job done.I always had alot of respect for Miles and thought of him as a top 3 coach in college football.Jefferson was not getting the job done with Lee standing on the sideline suited up with Miles still keeping faith in Jefferson.Was one of the worse moves from your headcoach that i ever seen.IMO a team can`t win on bad decisions.LSU beat itself.

  21. kozbee says: Sep 5, 2012 10:57 AM

    IMO i just can`t see USC even in the top5 due to SOS.Teams as Hawaii,Utah,Colorado,Cal,Wash,Stanford,UCLA,Ariz,Ariz st,ND,Orange men.Only team you have on schedule to play hard is Oregon.Looks like an easy season imo.Then wishing a match in a NC against Bama playing cupcakes the Trojans will be a U.M team as Bama left them.SOS should always be a part of ranking a team in the top 10.JMO..

  22. papabush88 says: Sep 5, 2012 11:46 AM

    @kozbee

    Then you’re basically saying that LSU and Alabama also shouldn’t be ranked in the top 5. Here is a list of strength of schedules. Alabama is 28, LSU is 29, and USC has the 30th ranked toughest schedule.

    http://www.fbschedules.com/2012/06/phil-steele-2012-college-football-strength-of-schedule-rankings/

  23. kozbee says: Sep 5, 2012 2:39 PM

    @ papa

    Your schedule looks real easy to me,i see one team that can stop USC from a no loss season.Oregon is that team and the reason i see USC winning the others because they are cupcakes.If USC beats Oregon then i would think they are that good but easy wins before them they should be ready.Reason Bama & LSU should be ranked is cause the wins last season plus playing for the title.I do hope to see USC in a NC with Bama to prove USC is just another team like Mich.

  24. papabush88 says: Sep 5, 2012 2:47 PM

    @kozbee

    But LSU and Alabama have just as weak of a schedule that USC has. Utah and UW are highly underrated…Utah will quietly win and maybe the country will see how good they actually are.
    Absolutely no way USC is just another Michigan. Michigan really only has one impact player on Offense: Denard. The problem is that Denard is so inconsistent and can be cancerous to his team with his INTs. How can you expect to be good when your impact player, who is also the QB, is extremely inconsistent? Just goes to show you how overrated Michigan was heading into that game.

    Barkley, Lee, Woods, McNeal, and Redd are the impact players for USC on offense. Barkley is consistent, which is so important for a QB, the most important position on the field.

  25. kozbee says: Nov 18, 2012 12:43 AM

    How do you feel about USC now as good as you thought at season start.Kiffin even recruits as he does imo will not win a NC @ Southern Cal.Kiffin knows how to waste a good team.JMO

  26. papabush88 says: Nov 19, 2012 12:39 AM

    @kozbee

    Guys like you crack me up. You’re going back to archived articles to talk smack. The only people that do this type of thing are he envious…the jealous. The haters. Focus too much negative energy on another team rather than positive energy on your own.

    This season didn’t go vey well, but I’m taking some positives from it. 1.) the SEC should no longer be seen as the toughest conference. PAC 12 is. Look at what this conference did to others and themselves. 2.) Monte Kiffin needed to go, and it looks like he will. 3.) Barkley will be gone. I’ve said from beginning that Barkley actually NEEDED another year to improve. I also never bought into Heisman hype for him. Although, I was thinking DAT would get it. 3.) we get a chance to play #1 Notre Dame. That’s pretty cool

  27. kozbee says: Dec 10, 2012 12:46 AM

    I always research to make sure my facts are on line.To be honest with you SC is a team i`ve enjoyed watching.Now Pete Carroll leaves and SC brings back a Kiffin is just not class enough for SC.IMO Kiffin i hope is a loser till he goes on another nite train to another team.I`ve already heard his daddy will be leaving and if Lane doesnt soon get them off the ground he will leave also.Goodluck next season.
