2013 Alabama commit arrested on rape, sodomy charges

Deon Johnson

Uh.  Oh.

In April of this year, three-star athlete Deon Johnson verbally committed to play football for Alabama in 2013.  Nearly five months later, the Spanish Fort (Ala.) high schooler is facing some very significant off-field issues that puts his future with the Tide — or a lot of other FBS school, for that matter — very much up in the air.

While the details are very scant at the moment, the Mobile Press-Register is reporting that Johnson was arrested Thursday evening on charges of second-degree rape and sodomy.  Again, other than the alleged victim being a juvenile and her parents notifying authorities, no details of what led to the arrest have been released.

The 18-year-old Johnson has since been released on a $20,000 bond.

Rivals.com has Johnson rated as the No. 13 player at any position in the state of Alabama.  As a junior last season, Johnson caught 63 passes and hauled in 19 touchdowns through the air.

In addition to the Tide, Johnson also held offers from, among others, LSU, Auburn and Mississippi State.

Typical SEC commit. The SEC would allow the Mississippi State Correctional Facility to be a member if it made their conference better in football.

  2. woebegong says: Sep 7, 2012 2:01 PM

No matter what, Alabama state would always take him.

  3. tlmoon2112 says: Sep 7, 2012 2:02 PM

The victim must not have been his sister cause they seem to be pretty ok with that there.

  4. newlydead says: Sep 7, 2012 2:09 PM

i would hold off judgement until all the facts come out. the kid is 18, i’m going to bet that the girl is actually his girlfriend, she is probably 16/17 and her parents walked in on them and are not happy.

    Innocent until proven guilty.

  6. tlmoon2112 says: Sep 7, 2012 2:20 PM

What do you mean man “innocent until proven guilty”?? This is Alabama football we’re talking about here! Winning is the Holy Grail kinda stuff! It aint like he killed some trees or anything!!

  7. tlmoon2112 says: Sep 7, 2012 2:21 PM

    (tongue in cheek)

  8. thecrazyasianinseccountry says: Sep 7, 2012 2:27 PM

Probably the same people in here that’s ready to fork him are the same people screaming for the arrest for the young lady that falsely accused Bank a few years ago.
As for this matter is concern, allow the legal system to take its course, and hope that justice swift and THOROUGH.

  9. mrlaloosh says: Sep 7, 2012 2:29 PM

Hey Saban, the media just doesn’t show Bama any respect! Sodomy? Ouch!

  10. deadeye says: Sep 7, 2012 2:35 PM

Gotta wait until all the facts come out.

Nonethe less, if this kid really did commit a crime, Saban will not stand for it. I guarantee a minimum of a two game suspension over this incident.

  11. overratedgators says: Sep 7, 2012 2:39 PM

As always … Stay classy, SEC.

  12. seanb20124 says: Sep 7, 2012 2:43 PM

Sounds like what happened to LSU.s Jeremy Hill when he was in HS

  13. bertenheim says: Sep 7, 2012 2:45 PM

Obviously the cops didn’t know he was a Saban recruit, and inadvertently made the Tuscaloosa campus a safer place.

  14. woebegong says: Sep 7, 2012 2:47 PM

You might want to wait until he is something more than a recruit, before you go condemning the SEC teams.
I guess, when the SEC is on the top, like they have been for the last 6 straight years, they are an easy target for those, who haven’t been there for a while, if ever.

  15. bertenheim says: Sep 7, 2012 2:49 PM

    Winning trumps campus safety.

  16. descendency says: Sep 7, 2012 2:57 PM

Given that he’s a 3 star recruit, they’ll just let him go of his scholarship and offer it to one of the other players they ‘accidentally’ over-signed.

  17. tlmoon2112 says: Sep 7, 2012 2:57 PM

Even Rick Reilly knows Saban is a toilet bowl floater. Every Bama fan should read this…….and then continue on in denial about your king.

  18. woebegong says: Sep 7, 2012 2:58 PM

You might want to wait until he is on a college campus before making that remark. The kid is a lot closer to Auburn and the gulf Coast than he is to the U of A. Lest you think I am an Alabama fan, forget that, however, I do expect more mature remarks out of some people than that. Well thought out remarks would be appreciated also. If the kid is indeed guilty of the crime, he will end up at an FCS school, like Isiah Crowell ended up, depending on how the trial goes. He will not see an SEC school, with that type of conviction.

  19. takingbovadasmoney says: Sep 7, 2012 3:01 PM

Who are you all kidding, he is only a 3 star recruit, Alabama wouldn’t even let him come onto campus through the backdoor.

It happened to an SEC comittment so nto big deal right SEC fan? Let the excuses begin! DEATH PENALTY TO BAMA!!! THEY TRIED TO COVER THIS UP!

Saban really has some of you goobs shaking in your diapers, don’t he? He must be a top shelf boogeyman to rate so much fear and loathing.
Hell, you’d think he was Woody Hayes. Except for the whole punching opposing players thing. Saban just glares them into the turf.

  27. bertenheim says: Sep 7, 2012 4:01 PM

The story is what kind of people do coaches want to bring on campus. It doesn’t matter if it’s football or tennis. It doesn’t matter if it’s SEC or WAC.
Should athletic success come at the price of public safety?

  28. dylude says: Sep 7, 2012 5:37 PM

Before you simply comment on the SEC, Alabama, etc. think seriously about what your opinion is of this crime this kid was alleged to have violated. If anyone cares to examine the law he is charged with breaking it’s very unfortunate.

He is 18 and a high school senior and second degree rape means if he had intercourse with a 15 year old high school sophomore even with her “consent” he would still be technically guilty of violating Alabama law.

That’s difficult to swallow knowing that the law was written in a time where the average age of promiscuity was higher than it is today.

They don’t update these laws to reflect the times, and high school kids are victims of this because they have no voice but are most vulnerable to society’s changing sexual standards.

If he forced himself on the girl, it wouldn’t just be second degree rape. So we’re talking about statutory rape in most other states. I really think the age matters. If a college football star has intercourse with a college sophomore it’s acceptable, but if a high school football star does the same while being 18 it’s second degree rape. The age of the girl really matters in my opinion.

  29. bigdinla says: Sep 7, 2012 6:18 PM

Did any of you idiots bother to read what 2nd degree rape is? It is consensual sex with someone under 16, but older than 12. DJ had sex with a 15 year old white girl and her parents found out. So why let facts get in the way of trashing the SEC!

  30. wabbitslayer says: Sep 7, 2012 6:20 PM

Eh, he’s just trying to get an offer from UGA.

  31. onceuponatimeinsports says: Sep 7, 2012 6:32 PM

Sodomy? Penn St. will take him!

  32. barnesaintnoble says: Sep 7, 2012 6:40 PM

Before you judge the kid, let’s remember what happened to Brian Banks. Plenty of reasons to make accusations if your identity is concealed – not saying he didn’t do it but let’s wait to judge.

But if you did judge, I can’t blame you. It’s this premature reporting garbage, how does this shit get out of the police station. It’s like no details have been released..besides the ones that will probably ruin the kids life if he didn’t do it. It’s Innocent Until Proven Guilty but we’ll release just enough to make you seem guilty.

  33. therealgts says: Sep 7, 2012 7:49 PM

How can anyone place any blame or negative comments on the schools or conferences in these situations? Yeah Saban knew this kid would put himself in this negative situation. I’m sure no one posting dumb ish ever hooked up with a sophomore when they were a senior while in high school. Not a Penn St fan but that comment was way out of line. #goblue

  34. bertenheim says: Sep 7, 2012 8:32 PM

If you’re the parent of a fifteen-year-old girl, second degree rape, or whatever you want to call it, is kind of a big deal.

  35. thraiderskin says: Sep 7, 2012 9:16 PM

These things happen, it doesn’t matter what conference you are from. Also, Its not like he forced the sex, he is only in trouble because her parents found out. While they (the girl’s parents) might be upset about it, is it really worth ruining this guys life because their daughter is as much a whore as the recruit is a criminal?

  36. mrlaloosh says: Sep 7, 2012 9:46 PM

delude, “difficult to swallow”? That’s what she said!

  37. raider2124 says: Sep 7, 2012 9:56 PM

“Tnb. Again a felon who will be allowed into school because of affermative action. Hopefully he does 20 years so taxpayers don’t have to desk with scum like this”

Judging from your horrific grammar, you seem to be jealous someone like him might have a chance to actually get through school. Sorry you didn’t make it past 3rd grade and all.

  40. marcinhouston says: Sep 8, 2012 12:31 AM

Don’t blame the SEC. The Big 10 is where they really look the other way on this kind of stuff.

  41. dylude says: Sep 8, 2012 1:34 AM

    To Raider2124:

Sending him to jail for 20 years would actually be a much bigger burden on tax payers.

You may hate “affermative action” (even though you can’t spell it haha) but I just hate ignorance. I feel like you feel the way you do because the accused is African American and that makes you way worse scum than a senior who has sex with a sophomore.

    To others:

The parents have every right to defend their daughter how they see fit, but I have every right to call into question the social relevance of the law. Hard to call a high schooler a “rapist” if he didn’t force himself on a girl who is also in high school. Doesn’t pass the smell test to me, and a young man’s life and family’s reputation is about to be ruined.

  42. kozbee says: Sep 8, 2012 10:12 AM

Problem here the girl is just 15 and regardless if she wanted it or not cause of her age it is rape.I don`t care what color he is,thing here is he should of known better that it could ruin his future at any college playing football or any sport.IMO i call this stupidfor him to have sex with a underage teen,i wonder how the parents found out.So many girls out there his age he could of had sex with but no he choose a little girl.Pay the price for it and use your brain next time, one on your shoulders and not between your legs.Deon is a rapest and needs to be placed on any list to let others know just who he is.This girl was underage same as Sandusky kids he raped.Parents pursue this he is going to jail unless the school pays him out of this mess. This kid is just plain dumb and he sure won`t be playing football in the SEC.

  43. phillyphann83 says: Sep 8, 2012 10:35 AM

This is why New Jersey has a 3-year exception to the law; an 18 year old cannot be charged with statutory rape of a 15 year old. These kids go to high school together and charges like this are ludicrous and a gross abuse of the system by racist parents. Same thing happened in Georgia at the start of the century and an innocent kid spent 3 years in jail of a 10 year sentence simply because his girlfriend gave him head. It took a Georgia state senator 2 years to persuade the state supreme court to throw out the conviction!! Once again, black kid, white girl. Every time I think we’ve come along way in the battle for equal rights and ending racism, someone from the south reminds us all that racism will never die in certain places in this country. Its so sad and pathetic. In case you were wondering, I’m white.

  44. militarygamecock says: Sep 8, 2012 12:56 PM

Can anyone point me in the direction of the facts of this case. I’m seeing an aweful lot of speculation. Question, how does everyone know the color and age of the alleged victim?

  45. militarygamecock says: Sep 8, 2012 1:09 PM

One more thing, he’s a superstar HS football player, all the whores in HS wanted a peice of him. This has been happening for years. Hopefully I can teach my daughter better than that but there is no gaurantee I can. I dont agree with the whole racist thing either, If I walked in on some 16/17/18 year old 250 lb white linemen popping to my white 15 yo daughter you can bet you skinny white/black a$$ I’m ruining that douchebag’s career. It’s either take action on my own or become an iformant for the man. The only time I’d go Samuel L Jackson on his a$$ would be if the legal system didnt work.

Come on people, get your head out of your A$$es. Anyone who is sticking up for this guy probably doesnt have kids, if so your kids probably arent going to amount to $h!t. How can you justify this. Yeah, lets get 15 yo’s pregnant. Another prime example of the downfall of this country. I hope everyone is enjoying this spiral into chaos.

  46. dcroz says: Sep 8, 2012 7:02 PM

    phillyphan83:

From what I understand, Alabama has a two-year exception to the law, so if he had been 17 then there would be no issue. As it is, I sincerely doubt that anything will come of this, as either the parents will drop the charges when he promises not to come near their daughter again, or the district attorney and/or grand jury will decline to prosecute.

Now, to your other assertion as to race: Just how is it that you know what the motivation of these parents were? Are you so willing to bet they would not have filed these charges if the guy had been white? Why, of course you would; you are, after all, a Yankee, and that carries with it god-like omniscience. Though I must say that if you really did know what you were talking about, you’d know that interracial relationships have become so common in the South (especially among the younger set) that hardly anyone even bats an eye at it. But keep right on thinking as you do; after all, Philadelphia is so well-known for its unconditional brotherly love and lack of anything even approaching violence that it has often been hailed as a model for people everywhere to follow. Even if you did boo Santa Claus and Mike Schmidt.

  47. dylude says: Sep 8, 2012 8:49 PM

    Kozbee–

LMAO. Listen to yourself…. You liken this kid to Sandusky but you call him a “dumb kid”.

    That makes NO SENSE.

My argument is that two high schools have sex and you want him on the same list as a 60 year old man abusing 8 year old boys?

And you call other people dumb? At the very least there is a grey area worth a discussion, and that was the point of my comments. High schoolers don’t have voices in the very law you’re using to defend your extreme position. That’s a problem we as a society need to fix.

  48. seadomer says: Sep 9, 2012 3:04 AM

Nothing against Bama or Sec, but on matter that inovlves alleged sexual misconduct, you have a sentence
“The 18-year-old Johnson has since been released on a $20,000 bond.”

  49. eleventyeight says: Sep 9, 2012 1:54 PM

Before everybody convicts his huy remember that the girl(?) is an underage schoolkid.

It’s entirely possible that this is a case of a hateful parent being angry at their kid for being sexually active and taking out that anger on this guy.

A fair number of teenaged girls will cry “rape!” to avoid getting themselves into trouble.

Since this guy is just 18ish i’m giving him the benefit of the doubt until the facts come out.

Unfortunately for him, however, is that he will now forever be considered evil and dangerous even if he is cleared.

Girls lie. Not all of them. But some do, even if it means unfairly destroying the accused man’s reputation.

If he’s innocent i wish him luck.

If he’s guilty- may God have mercy oon his soul…

  50. bostonbias says: Sep 12, 2012 1:59 AM

I wonder if there is a “culture’ that created this problem. I am saying that because it is crazy. Each person is responsible for his or her own actions. He broke the law. We do not get to pick the laws you want to obey. The people joke about rape make me sick.

  51. kozbee says: Sep 12, 2012 11:07 PM

Rape is rape if your 60 or 18 or don`t you get it.Your whole post made no sense.
