Cal to be sans top lineman this weekend

Based on the fact that Cal will be taking a deep bite into a tasty pastry this weekend, the loss of a talented member of its trenches due to injury won’t mean much.

If the issue lingers beyond Saturday? That’s a whole other meaning entirely.

Regardless, and as it pertains to the here and now, Bears head coach Jeff Tedford confirmed that starting right tackle Matt Summers-Gavin will not play this weekend due to an MCL issue in his left knee. Summers-Gavin suffered the injury last week, the Contra Costa Times reported.

Somewhat ominously, Tedford described the injury as a week-to-week thing as opposed to day-to-day.

“We’ll see how it responds,” Tedford said. “People have played through those things at times. Just depends on the level of swelling and soreness.”

Summers-Gavin has started 25 of the 32 games in which he’s played over the past three seasons.

After snacking on a dessert consisting of Thunderbird this weekend, Cal will travel to Ohio State the following weekend to face No. 14 Ohio State in Columbus. A week later, the Bears open Pac-12 play on the road against No. 2 USC.
