Arkansas QB Tyler Wilson won’t return following injury

Tyler Wilson AP

In Tyler Wilson‘s first season as Arkansas’ starter last year, the quarterback was on the receiving end of several brutal hits  Unfortunately, that trend has continued into the 2012 season.

The senior suffered what for the time being is only described as an above-the-shoulder injury in the first half of the No. 8 Razorbacks’ game with Louisiana-Monroe.  The injury will force Wilson to the sideline for the duration of the non-conference game.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette‘s Matt Jones wrote that “[o]fficials declined to comment whether Wilson had suffered a concussion.”

At the time of the injury, Wilson, who was replaced by Brandon Allen, had passed for 196 yards and two touchdowns as the Razorbacks jumped out to a 21-7 lead at the half.  At the time of this posting, UA was up 28-14 late in the third quarter.

Next weekend, Arkansas will host No. 1 Alabama so, yes, this will be a development we’ll be following throughout the week.

Concussed? Bet he still plays against Alabama. He might line up under tackle with a drool bib, but he will play….

Tyler Wilson is a really good QB and the General of the Arkansas offense. The loss of Wilson is huge. I am sorry he is injured. I hope he receives the best care and recovers completely.

If it is a concussion, there must go forth a huge demand for helmet manufacturers to use better space age shock absorbing cushions and better protection against such injuries. That definitely appears something they can do. Coaches and players should be demanding this improvement in the helmets which are using 40 year old technology.

I hope Tyler will recover very soon.

Head injuries are a very serious problems for both college and pro football. Law suits are proceeding about this situation in the NFL. New technology for helmets has been a cause promoted by the doctor at southernpatriots for decades now. It would seem coaches and players should be able to get athletic equipment manufacturer’s to listen.

The absence of Tyler in the game in the second half, opened the door for UL-Monroe to upset/defeat the Razorbacks.

I have quite a few authentic and game worn helmets in my collection. These things feel like they weigh 15 pounds. There has to be a way to make them more lightweight. As for Tyler, I think concussions are gonna be a reoccurring theme with him. He’s a NFL QB but I’m not sure how many hits he will be able to take before they tell him he needs to hang it up.
