Penn State head coach Bill O’ Brien had already confirmed earlier this week that Derek Day would start at running back vs. Virginia, but had continued to hold out hope that starter Bill Belton would be able to see some action in the nonconference game.
This morning we officially learned there’s no hope of that happening.
The school confirmed a couple of hours prior to today’s noon ET kickoff that Belton did not even make the trip to Charlottesville and, obviously, will not be available.
Belton suffered an ankle injury in the third quarter of the season-opening home loss to Ohio University last weekend and has been officially listed as day-to-day. In that opener, Belton led the Nittany Lions with 53 yards rushing.
Day, the former walk-on who will be making his first collegiate start, replaced Belton after the injury and responded with 36 yards on eight carries.
