USC defeats Syracuse, but loses starting center

It wasn’t done in spectacular fashion, but No. 2 USC flew across the country and took care of business against Syracuse, defeating the Orange 42-29 in MetLife Stadium.

Unfortunately for the already-thin Trojans, they couldn’t just get the W and fly back to L.A. without some drama -- and we’re not talking weather delays. Midway through the fourth quarter, center Khaled Holmes (pictured, No. 78) suffered what looked like an ankle injury and eventually had to be carted off the field. It’s unclear yet exactly what the injury is or how severe it is.

Injuries have been an issue for USC even before the season started because of the NCAA-imposed 75-scholarship limit. The last thing Lane Kiffin‘s team needs is to begin losing more starters the first month into the season. A captain, Holmes was a preseason mention on watch lists for both the Rimington and Outland Trophies.

We’ll keep you updated the moment we know more on the situation, but this looks like it could be very bad for USC.
