Cal won’t have top lineman vs. Buckeyes

When Cal takes the field this weekend for its road date with No. 12 Ohio State, the Pac-12 school will do so yet again sans (giggle) its top offensive lineman.

After playing in the opener, starting right tackle Matt Summers-Gavin was held out of last week’s win over Southern Utah due to an issue with the MCL in his right knee. Head coach Jeff Tedford confirmed Tuesday that, yes, the injury described as week-to-week will keep the veteran lineman out against the Buckeyes.

Of greater import conference-wise for the Bears is next week as they will open up Pac-12 play against No. 2 USC. Obviously, Summers-Gavin’s availability for the Trojans is up in the air at the moment.

Summers-Gavin has started 25 of the 32 games in which he’s played over the past three seasons, and is far and away the Bears’ most experienced returning lineman.
