Illini’s leading rusher out, too

As it turns out, the top two player in Illinois’ backfield will be unavailable for this afternoon’s Feast of the Cupcake.

The Illini had previously confirmed that starting quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase would miss a second straight game due to an ankle injury suffered in the season opener two weeks ago. Now, it’s being reported that starting running back Josh Ferguson will not play in today’s game against Charleston Southern.

The State Journal-Register writes that Ferguson “didn’t practice this week after complaining of a headache.”

Ferguson rushed for a career-high 101 yards in the loss to Arizona State, and leads the Illini with 139 yards through two games.

With Ferguson out, sophomore Donovonn Young is expected to get the starting nod.
